The Eyes Have It. « Thread Started on Dec 13, 2008, 7:38am »
Sorry, it is late and I oughta be in bed.
But. I painted the Bully Icthyosaurus today, and I am still bugged by its eyes. There is a large sculpted circle with a smaller sculpted circle inside of that. Is the larger circle the bone around the eye, with the smaller circle being the eye itself, or is the larger circle the eye, and the smaller the pupil?
I know opthalumus had bigger eyes, but what about icthyo? Also, any thoughts on color?
Anyone who has a hard time with the fact that Aves are maniraptoran theropods must not have a firm understanding the biology of modern birds!

Ichthyosaurs had huge orbits (eye sockets) and within them, large and robust sclerotic rings (a ring of bones), thusly: The sclerotic ring supported the eye and resisted water pressure upon the eye - it was covered in skin and presumably muscles which attached to the eyeball. Therefore, only the inner circle in the Bullyland figure is actually eyeball, so to speak. Whether Ichthyosaurs had a distinct pupil or not - who knows?

Really? (I knew it was in the same family as leopard geckos, but wow) I have never seen a leopard gecko with such a dark coloration! I've seen fat-tailed geckos with a similar color, but leo? No. Thats pretty awesome..
I used to have the lizard that carries that first, orange eye. He was a pretty fast lizard too. It was a green forest lizard, if I remember correctly.
