Oh! right, salutations and greetings from Canada! « Thread Started on Sept 16, 2011, 2:58am »
I can't believe I still haven't introduced myself, I'm not much of a collector (I haven't really collected dinosaur toys/figurines/dollies since I was about 13), but I do love fossil hunting and I even found a nice Megalodon tooth and my fair share of oddities (one such piece we brought to the Tyrell Museum thinking it might be a degraded spine, turns out it was a tree root that was struck by lighting *shrugs* how weird is that?).
Heck, even when I was just 6 we were out at Drumheller for holidays, it was my favorite place, and we even had a picking site along a certain road to a certain town where we found things from average shells to loads of petrified wood (btw a chunk of quartzy petrified wood looks fantastic in a 20 gallon tank with a sorority of pretty lady bettas).
Uhm, back to who I am, I live in Edmonton, Alberta, born in Vancouver raised in Edmonton and even seasoned by the Saskatchewan praries, I love drawing and from what most people tell me I can assume they're well done, I sometimes feel like it's just the normal shock and awe of someone who can draw fantasy critters that don't suck, I don't have any real talent (aka I'm no where near good enough for a place like conceptart). I love reading, especially the works of Stephen King, Richard Dawkins, Dean Koontz, and a fair it of scientific literature regarding my chosen studies at the time.
Fun fact: I was adamant about becoming a paleontologist ever since I was a young boy, basically when I found out about dinosaurs and who studied them, but my grades just weren't good enough and with my families moving around so much I just lost my spark, having to repeat the 10th grade when I was supposed to be graduating really sucked the will out of me.
Another fun fact: I one day dream of owning a pet store and having a dinosaur theme to the place, from large museum quality models to a special tank/diorama to show off the aquatic section, I really want kids to come into my store and look around in awe, I want my store to be a place you go to get real information from real people who really own and care for their animals, ya know? I don't my legacy to be a billion dollar business that gets sold off after my death for more cash, I want my legacy to be inspiration to the next generation, if even just one boy or girl can learn a tiny bit about history and the animals that came from them, then I'll be happy.
As for a background with pets, I've had for myself everything from a Tiger Salamander (saved him from a water plant (a place that disposes of the salty water from frack jobs)) to a sorority of Betta Splendens females (most people think all bettas need to be kept seperate, but females can actually be kept in large numbers as a group), currently petless however, my fish were recently wiped out by an outbreak of bloat (I can only use the information given to me about how they died, I was unfortunately away for a week and they passed away while I was gone), and my dog (RIP Oreo) was put down about a year ago, still pretty tender from that.
So... yeah, I think that's about it, I hope to be a pretty good member while I'm here (which hope isn't for a short visit) and I hope to get to know the wonderful people here a little better.

Welcome to the site and I appreciate the back story. I'm like you in that I've been hit with the realization I'll probably never be a paleontologist or any other kind of 'ologist which was my life dream for as long as I can remember. Opening a pet shop is one of many ideas I've toyed around with but it would be fish centered as that is where I'm most knowledgeable. I've also toyed around with the idea of starting a poultry farm/bird zoo type setting with a dinosaur theme so I can appreciate your goal.

Actually, wouldn't a bird-centric zoo be a dinosaur zoo? lol, I know I'd pay to visit a dinosaur zoo, and thank you, it was a sad day indeed when my councilor sat me down in her office and said (and I quote) "I need you to redecide what kind of career you want, with your current grades you can't be any kind of scientist".

Basically it would which is sort of the idea. I would really love it if I could have life size dinosaur replicas among the birds. For example, ostriches displayed with ornithomimosaurs or if there was a waterfowl pond perhaps some sort of hadrosaur drinking from the pond. Picture an updated Crystal Palace Park inhabited by birds. I cannot believe your councilor would say that. None of mine ever discouraged me in such a way, I would find out for myself AFTER going to college for a few semesters.

The old Crystal Palace Park was pretty cool, so an updated one with aves would be really awesome, also my councilor was the kind of councilor that did it for the money, I got more encouragement from my doctor and gym teacher than I did from her.

Actually, I would have loved to become a palaeontologist myself, but Chemistry and Maths made me decide otherwise. As for me, IŽd love to open a bookstore such as Shakespeare And Company. But our aim is the same: Making people awe and inspiring them. Welcome! And thank you for sharing such nice stories with us!

Thank you very much Libraraptor, and tbh opening a bookstore is my second dream, if I can't show people how wonderful and diverse the life on our planet is, then I can help them learn about it via the magic of literature.
