Sorry for bumping, but I was wondering who makes the best Whale Shark? Also, any really good Mako or Threshers out there?

Sorry for bumping, but I was wondering who makes the best Whale Shark? Also, any really good Mako or Threshers out there? No general public Makos--yet. Although there is a good small one in the Wild Safari Sharks toob. There are several whale sharks--I quite like the Wild Safari sealife one, and it isn't much different from the Monterey Bay one (the MB is a little longer). There was a Monterey Thresher, but I don't know if they still make it. There is a good, small one in that same sharks toob. If you are willing to paint your own, there is a model company--Neko Works--that makes some great one-piece models of sharks. I have the Hybodus and Stethacanthus. www.hlj.com/hljlist2/?fb=0&SeriesID=1479&Dis=2&Title=Shark%20Attack%20Resins%20from%20Neko%20WorksThey are unpainted, white resin. But they are very well made. There is also a pretty good variety (sadly, their cookie cutter is out of production--I would totally have picked one up if they were still around).

Oh, those are beautiful, Sbell. The shipping costs are a little frightening though (to the UK, at any rate).

Oh, those are beautiful, Sbell. The shipping costs are a little frightening though (to the UK, at any rate). Wow, really? I seem to recall that the postage for 2 figures was about the same as a single figure. I would suggest getting in touch with them, it might not be so bad. Unless you ran through the whole checkout process, and that's what they told you. In which case, unfortunately, there's not much you can do... Although I just checked--for SAL to the UK, it's 660 Yen (about $6.50 USD, no idea in pounds sterling). That should be able to get several figures at once. Even EMS, which is much faster, is only about $12, and in my opinion, very much worth it.

Ah, no, I hadn't gone through the checkout yet. But if several figures could be had with that, then that's much more promising. It was the Fed-ex option that was scary. I've had such appalling luck with parcels from abroad of late that I was rather loathed to consider the SAL. I have this idea that the longer it takes to ship, the more danger the parcel is exposed to! I'm extraordinarily patient, so it's not waiting I'm worried about; it's the parcel's safety. I'm sort of forced to default on a more expensive option just so I can have some way of tracking it. So the EMS sounds best in this case, I think.

I'm trying to find photos of the actual Whale shark models---stock photos rarely represent the final product. 99% of websites just have the "official" pics from Safari and Schleich.

Sorry for being late, didn't check here lately... I have the Schleich Whale Shark: By the way, Safari Ltd. made a Mako in the 90s - actually that was my first Safari figure I bought in 1998:

Sorry for being late, didn't check here lately... I have the Schleich Whale Shark: Where, where, where did you find that base ? It's really so hard to find a, not too big, base which not hurt the model

Hi kikimalou,
I hope you're not too disappointed but that's merely the base that came with the Invicta Ichthyosaurus and Blue Whale. I often used them for photographing other marine figures.

Disappointed ? I only have to buy 20 Ichthyo or blue wales, then put the models into the trashcan and I will have wonderful bases ;D

They're wonderful. I have the Papo humpback whale (its mouth opens too), but not the Schleich yet.

It is less detailed and slightly smaller than the Schleich but I like the moveable jaw: I've never seen the Safari Ltd. Monterey Bay Humpback Whale in person. Does anybody have a photo other than those from the catalogue? Schleich made some other marine mammal figures, especially whales: Sperm Whale, Physeter macrocephalusDwarf Rorqual, Balaenoptera acutorostrataNorthern Right Whale, Eubalaena glacialisElephant Seal, Mirounga leonina

Yes, some of Schleich's animals are sometimes curiously cartoon-like, but their marine mammals are really lovely.
