Hey everyone-- I recently picked up quite a few modern PV mammals/reptiles, and was wondering if anyone (maybe Sbell?) had a complete list of the small and large figures they made. I picked up quite a few cool little big cats, and would love to know what else is out there. thanks!

Hey everyone-- I recently picked up quite a few modern PV mammals/reptiles, and was wondering if anyone (maybe Sbell?) had a complete list of the small and large figures they made. I picked up quite a few cool little big cats, and would love to know what else is out there. thanks! There was a time that I could have tried, but to be honest, I was never fully sure, or aware, and occassionally I still see things that surprise me. And that's just the small series--the large ones never really took off the same way, usually two or three based on the small ones. So... Prehistoric Amphibians, Preh marine reptiles, dinosaurs (not worth it), Preh mammals, birds of preym parrots/cockatoos, mites & ticks, weasels, mongooses, bears, wild dogs, wild cats, domestic dogs, domestic cats, geckos & chameleons, exotic lizards, salamanders, exotic snakes, frogs & toads, monkeys, african ungulates, Gir Forest, Arctic animals, sharks, dolphins, whales, tropical fish, starfish, crabs, lemurs, tortoises & terrapins, Serengeti, North American, Amazon, horses, bats, eels & sea snakes, slugs (I think), sea turtles, butterflies, tropical forest (Congo?). Here is the fun part--often they reused a figure frmo one set for another (jaguar was in the Amazon and big cats, for example); other times, they made different figures (different giraffes in the ungulates and Serengeti sets). And there is a good chance that I missed some--there is no definitive list, But if you are thinking you found a set--they are almost always in 8 (except the crappy dino set--24). There may be one or two others that are not 8. The way to know what is missing? Each one is stamped, somewhere, with a number of where it belongs in the series (which is another fun way to tell when figures were reused). And for those wondering, no I don't have all of those sets. And it is all too bad--they were overall great figures, if a little rough compared to what a company like Kaiyodo or Safari have done in the same size. But apparently they got tired of getting bootlegged, so they just got out of the business of small animals completely.

Thanks so much Sean! I don't have any complete sets, the most is 4 or 5 from what is presumably the same series (except for the darn whales, of which I have 7). That really helps though, thanks a bunch! I'll try to get some pics up soon of what I found.

That really helps though, thanks a bunch! I'll try to get some pics up soon of what I found. I have a few complete sets, and a few random individuals. Looks like, from your photos, I forgot at least one--the crocodiles & alligators! Of all the sets, I regret not somehow getting the salamander one. The rest (that I don't have) don't bother me that much (I would regret the lemur one, but honestly I only found out about it recently--and back in 1995, I had a store that let me got through their catalogues. If I didn't see it then, I don't know when it was around). The eels/sea snakes, to me, is one of the best of the modern sets--it is so out of left field; in some ways it is too bad that they didn't separate the two--eels themselves are varied enough anyway. Plus, who else is going to make a mastacembelid (not a true eel)? Not even Yujin or Kaiyodo did that one. One problem with PV--they were always meant, and thought of, as bin toys (although there were box sets--that's how I got my eels). But for the most part, they were meant as cheap, impulse toys to put next to the register. Which means that there is no card with the sets on it, no info on the animals, not much of anything. Which probably explains the rarity of, say, the prehistoric amphibians, while the wild cats and dogs were among the last sets to retire. And I would wager that the slugs and mites&ticks, despite being some of the most innovative (in the former, nothing like that has been seen until recently, thanks to Yujin; for the latter, not even the Japanese have made a blood-sucking parasite set) were even less popular, which is a shame in a way.

I love the Beluga whale. I like all their whales, actually, now I think of it.

I like them Love the eels, they big? I have a few of the small modern animals from them, I'm building them up slowly ;D Hey, if you ever want to find more, I know a seller on ebay that sells them often at a reasonable price.

Hey Boki! I don't have a ruler with me but the eels are about 4" long. I know I used to have the last one as a kid, but can't seem to find it. And if it's not too much trouble could you pm me the name of the seller? I'd really appreciate it, thanks!

I remember when alpop used to sell all kinds of PV figures--that's where I first saw the lemurs. Sadly, it's been years since he had any of note. And just for fun, I have all of my PV figures pictured here: picasaweb.google.com/HyenaSean/PlayVisions#I used to have a lot more, but over time I let lots of them go--like the birds and monkeys.

The photo shows some of the extant PV salamanders: Marbled, Long-tailed, Northern Red, Spotted (not PV, bootlegged, no ID), Eastern Long Toed. I do not know if the total is 8. If anyone can name the missing species, I would like to hear them.

I also have a couple of those bootlegs (I think the reptiles and mammals were the most commonly copied).

Thanks, sbell. Is the number on the mudpuppy # 6? My highest number is the long-tailed, # 5. Perhaps this set only has six salamanders. Should PlayVisions be two words, Play Visions?

It is number 06, but I am pretty sure that there were 8 (can't prove it though). And I just realized that there are at least two frog sets--and 'exotic' frog set (or something like that) and a 'frogs & toads' set (I have the Surinam toad, that's it).

You are a great friend, sbell. I appreciate the information. Even with the mudpuppy as the high number, we still have the spotted salamander as a wild card. My guess is that the spotted is number 2 (not joking). The adventure continues.

My Salamander numbers are as follows:: 1 - Northern Red 2 - Spotted Salamander 3 - Eastern Long-Toed 4 - Marbled? (Mine's a fake i just realized) 5 - Long-Tailed 6 - Mudpuppy
I would love it if there were 2 more, but I've never heard them, and I'm pretty OCD about scouring every "lizard" auction that pops up on ebay
