I was looking up images of the Vastatosaurus rex to refresh my memory of its details and was surprised to see how small its arms are compared to the new Papo...
That image is also clearly fanart - the original V. rex had three fingers on each hand.

Oops, he is missing that little thumb nail, isn't he. I thought this particular image might have been "art", and like you said, very good art. But his proportions look very much like the other movie still pics I saw.

I think that if you close its mouth its head comes close to "passing" for a T-Rex without having to switch out the lower jaw. We can just chalk it up to individual morphology (ie this was an acromegalic "Lurch" TRex)

maybe that is what they were going for? to try and capitalize on Dinosaur Revolution's popularity ?
I'm really dying to try and pop that jaw off and switch the two..maybe even switch the arms as well...anyone wanna be a ghoul and send me some so I can play Frankenstein ?

Oh no, I don't think very many dinosaurs can look THAT bad! I was thinking spikes like the kind the allo has. Varying sizes, shapes, and for good measure make a few bent or broken off. Lots of spikes and skutes. The head has those nice big scales coming away from the eyes and on top of the snout, but the scales on the body look like they are mostly small, even, and uninteresting.
EDIT: is that giganto pic even real? It looks alike a colored pencil drawing Quick, lets get some more replies and bump on to the next page. It burns my eyes!
...yeah, OK, but how is that Greg Paul-esque? I mean, they tended to actually be divided.
Is "Gregory Paul-esque" because he tends to restore T.rex with the postorbital and the lacrimal rugosities divided JUST like in the actual skull (as your pic of AMNH 5027 shows), while a proper JP Rex has the aforementioned rugosities united by a ridge (and i'd guess in reality that was probably the case, thus strenghtening the head)... Anyway, i thought too that Papo gave their new Rex a deformed jaw as a nod to Dinosaur Revolution; intentional or not, it's a kickass touch
As for the arms, heck, i shortened them on my (third) Papo Rex, i can easily do the same with this guy too!

People!! Why can't we just call it a mutant T-Rex and stop criticising this beautiful figure?! I mean seriously, many of you have the 1st papo T-rex right? So why criticise the new one that looks different and cool in a different way? It doesn't have to look the same as the 1st one. So the arms are a little big so what? It's new, it has much better detail then the 1st Rex and they did the right thing by placing a bigger jaw and hands so that it would look different then the 1st one. And by the way i like the tooth sticking out. It characterises the model. Like for instance it had a fight, or bit something that broke it. What I'm trying to say is that, it doesn't have to look precise or the same as the 1st Tyrannosaurus. It looks different that's the thing about this model. So it can have more sails to. So I think that there is nothing to criticise about this Papo model.

Oh, there's lots to criticize. And no, I don't have the first one and never will.

I DO have the first one, but because it was a very good JP knock-off, and I do like JP rex figures. That was what redeemed it when it came to all the inaccuracies - the original Stan Winston Studios-designed creature had them too (although that was back in the 1993). The new one doesn't look like the JP rex, which makes its anatomical accuracies stand out that bit more.
Especially the arms...
Still, I'll probably end up still getting one, because it's obviously a very good sculpt in terms of pure aesthetics. Not accurate, but well detailed for the price. I might have it sent to Sid or someone else who can fix the arms...
Maybe i'm a bit ignorant on that matter, but for what other purpose a bony ridge would serve?
Just display. The bosses on tyrannosaurs don't really seem to have any other purpose. Greg Paul has suggested head-butting, but they seemed to be more fond of biting each other

Truly, I think the thickened jaw of the toy could be practical reasons. If it is designed as a toy to be played with (which it is), then perhaps feedback from the first version prompted some alterations?
Perhaps thickening the jaw overall toincrease durability. And thickening ans squaring out the tip could make it easier for smaller hands to open and close the mouth.
It was said that we critique these as collecters items and not toys, but I disagree a bit. Many toy lines are reviewed purely as toys.Dino riders etc. No one says, oh, but thatis so inaccurate about those....Papo is no different. They are not billed as museum figures or anything other than toys.

Maybe those bosses and ridges were different in males and females, or varied from age to age, or maybe every Tyrannosaurus had a slighly different ornamentation, just like in all the other animals (us included) everyone as a different face

Dino rider figures were pretty accurate for the time during which they were made. This is... not so much.
