I haven't been keeping up with this thread.. What materials are you using to sculpt the outer layers of your yard dinos?

I was using AV foam , the brand was Great Stuff originally. But the problem was the stuff breaks down outdoors in sun no matter how well it's sealed. So now I use foam to to make the last layers and then coat them in vinyl. That's how I've done the Para , Pteranoodns, and the big Raptor...I plan to do the same with the current Spino. I can actually cut scales into the vinyl with a soldering tool..so it works pretty well.

That's looking seriously cool! I couldn't access the video though, as I'm not a facebooker. :( Any way to make it available to us hold-outs? :D

If it still moves like that when completed, you should film it and add a dino roar.

That would make an excellent scarecrow (and a "scarekids" too ;D) !

The head looks fine, looking forward to see the teeth and rest of details .

It would be neat to build one out of thin plywood..paint it for outdoor use and all. Maybe I could use Velociraptors and call em' Scare-Raptors ? ;D

I'm going to write this down..might be cool to do 3 of those and see em ' all moving in the breeze like that.. heh heh

I'm heading out in a bit to wrap more chicken wire..it's going slowly..partially because I'm still painting that big Raptor..which has to be done when it isn't raining or too humid...and that's all it's done every other day here.. :(

Another update :

The wire frame is done, and I'd starting to add the vinyl " skin " finally !

This fellow is going to be a bit larger than I planned..can't wait to see the final length when I'm done.

I'm also looking into making and selling the head as a bust, will come with a base if wanted. They will be painted and all and about 17-18" long. How much would you guys think I should charge for something like that ? I'd also take custom orders to do other species as well.

Black spinosaurus? I like. What do you do for a living anyways? You can finance all these and then there are those skull casts and fancy resin models and everything. :-[

He's just dark brown now as that's the color of the vinyl material I'm using.. ;)

Honestly ? I'm a free lance artist that does odd jobs and a little selling on the side..mostly out of my own collection. I have been saving for quite awhile and selling off older toys to replace with nice more " upscale " I guess..Dino-related art is all. I also get paid at the seasonal job I have at the haunt but it isn't much..about 600.00 for 3 months of work not counting all the planning and design work in the off season.

BTW, I finally was able to measure him from heat to tail tip....finally tally : 14 FEET !! I think that puts him about a 1/4 the size of a fully grown adult right ?

Man I can't do ANYTHING small I guess... lol ;D

Thank you both !

This one has actually progressed somewhat faster than previous pieces..I guess because my experience is growing more. ;D I know I've worked on it since July 13 actually building that is..before that I was compiling info. I work about from 4pm-8pm on average but with this one I have doing the head, spine and hands indoors then just attaching them when finished...I worked last night finishing the coating on the sail from 10pm-3:30 am . It all the little detail work that start slowing me down..the scales on the head have to be sculpted onto the rest of the body and then all the little spines and spikes have to made individually and added. I wanted to be done before I start work on the haunt but I don't think that's going to happen now..lol

It's moving along ..I finished the right shoulder today, heated and hardened all the back area and plugged a lot of small holes and gaps. I started layering the toes on the left side as well.

The spine is almost done..I'm going to put all the spikey bits all over it before attaching though. ;D

Ironically it's not much sculpting really...just a foam under body and then the heated vinyl is applied. I do have to cut out all the scales individually ..but after that it's mostly just applying them correctly....but thanks for the compliment ! ;D
