 Old School Dinosaur Movies
« Thread Started on Oct 28, 2008, 12:47am »

Im surprised this hasnt been made into a thread yet, but what are your favorite "old school" dinosaur movies? The 2 that stand out in my mind as favorites are "One Million Years BC" (Ray Harryhousen is awsome) and "THe Land that Time Forgot" (not to be confused with "The Land Before Time a cartoon movie)

A couple of other notable fav films are "When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth" (See my avatar for a fun still from that movie) and the original "King Kong." The original King Kong is arguably the first movie that made dinosaurs scary and intense subjects for film.

There are lots of other films out there. I would love to find a data base of what dinosaur movies are out there and what type of animals appeared in it and what not.

So what are your favs?

8-) The original King Kong came out in 1933. Movies hadn't even had sound that long. All things considered the Dinosaurs in the movie were ahead of their time. Other then color I don't really think Dinosaur animation improved much until Jurrassic Park. ::)

I think I prefer the old animations (Harryhousen-like). That for me is the best kind of celluloid dinosaurs ever 8-)

GWANGI! Its about a T-rex that a group of cowboys wrestle up and take into town.

I liked the king kong movies, but I don't agree with him beating a T-rex. Thats almost impossible. Espcially in the 05 remake when he took down 3. Lol, those things bit him many times, but it didn't even hurt him! How fake is that!? It should have ripped his arms out of sockit.

I also don't agree with the fact that they made king kong 44 feet tall instead of 25 in the godzilla movie. He beat godzilla too. I thought godzilla was a good guy?

All of those movies are screwed up. ::)

Ah yes Gwangi, that is another "Ray Harryhousen" Dino movie. He only did 2 (3 if you count animal world), but he had sketches and storyboards for at least a 1/2 dozen others. If your a fan of the stop motion animation technique I'd Reccomend "Ray Harryhousen: An Animated Life." Its full of pictures and ideas and other goodies from ALL his movies, really cool book.

Yeah I always hated that Kong always killed the tyrannosaurs, man if one of those things got its bone crunching maw around kong's arm, that would have renedered it useless.

The Kong in King Kong vs. Godzilla, is not neccesarilly the same one seen on skull island. True their both apes and very big, but one is part of the TOHO monster universe, where everything is exagerated, and Giant monsters attack and destroy cities, only to have the cities mieracously rebuilt, only to have the next big threat come and knock it down.

Heres another fun fact about King Kong vs. Godzilla. The ending of the movie has 2 different versions, the Japenese version has Godzilla the winner!

Tyrannax have you seen the movie "The Last Dinosaur?" It features a T-Rex primarily your personal fav! It is a late 70s movie I think, and the Dinos are in the big awkard Godzilla-style suite.

Some other cool recomendations for the old school lovers: "Caveman", it has Ringo Starr in it! And "Planet of the Dinosaurs" cool stop motion dinos in it....another 70s flick.

Quick question, has anybody ever seen or heard of "A Nymphoid Barbarion in Dinosaur Hell?" I never saw it and was wonderin if it was any good.

Yes, Gwangi truly is a great movie. Felt sorry for the elephant when the rex killed him, but I liked the rex better ;D

I own planet of the dinosaurs and have seen many older movies such as the lost world- a kind of unheard of dinosaur movie.

Wow thats awesome! I have to rent that movie, thanks nobs!

There is one where Godzilla wins? Thats much better. A dumb ape couldn't best a reptile anyday. I'm a huge Godzilla fan. I own many of the movies, games and figures.

My all-time favorite "old school" dinosaur movies:

1) The Lost World (1925)

2) King Kong (1933)

3) One million Years B.C. (1960 circa)

4) Gwangi (1962...Harryhausen effects kick so much ass even by today standards 8-))

You are correct Gwangi is an "Allosaur" HOWEVER with that said, it is blown up to T-Rex proportions, he did that in One Million Years BC as well, except it was a Ceratosaur that was blown up to the larger portion.

Raquel Welch and Martine Beswick catfight...Mmmh ;D

I totally agree even regarding the 1925 Lost World:professor Challenger portrayal was top notch,so were the dinosaurs (especially that homicidal Allosaurus ;D) and even that kickass ape-man who kept to be shot in the right arm ;D ;D

I liked gwangi a lot, but have not seen it in ages. I liked one million BC too. But just for the Ceratosaurus. I still have a soft spot for Disney's fantasia dinosaur sequence, and very fond memories of the tv shows Land of the Lost and Valley of the Dinosaurs.

fantasia has a small movie short called the rite of spring featuring music from igor stravinsky and tells about the birth of the world leading up to the end of the dinosaurs. It is very moving for having no words or narration instead it uses the sounds of drums and trumpets for the stomping and action and fleeing of the dinosaurs. Very nice piece for its time.

Land of the Lost, now that show was awsome! Now here the question, are you referring to the circa 1970's version, or the remake of the show done in the 1990s? I always thought the sleestax in the 70s version were creepy lookin. Ive also heard rumors of a "Land of the Lost" movie starring non other than Will Ferrel...... only time will tell I guess!

OH what show is "Valley of the Dinosaurs" Ive never heard of it before!

The old Land of the Lost. With the claymation Dinos.....I have never seen the new one.

Valley of the Dinosaurs was similar, a family trapped in a world that time forgot..... it was an animated Sat morning show I have not seen since I was a kid. But, it was Dinos, so was a favorite by default... ::) ;D

I think Boomerang was running it on cable a few years back. And Fantasia is not about a girl. It is several animated shorts, all set to classical music, and without dialog. The classic image of Mickey Mouse, as a socerors apprentice directing lightning, thunder and comets from a mountaintop is from Fantasia. The dino sequence, I seem to recall, had a stego vs Allo bit in it. 8-)

Here is a small pick of the stego vs "t-rex" fight. It has three claws on its hands, so I call it an Allosaur. ;D

Here is a shot for Valley of the Dinosaurs. Mid 70's. Not a lot of pics I can find in a quick search.

Here are two for Land of the lost: Grumpy (t-rex?) vs Big Alice (allosaurus?)

and grumpy getting dinner on the go...

and finally, a smattering from Valley of the Gwangi. Dinos meet cowboys. Cowboys capture dino and take it back to civilization. What could POSSIBLY go wrong....

Hmmm, not sure this is a good idea, but REALLY, what could go wrong?

??? :o :o :o Yowza!! Who coulda anticipated THAT???? :-/ ::) ::) ::)
