Doesn't you can't do your own variation eh ? ;D True, though the freshness will have gone out of it now. ;D Besides, Patriatyrannus has done it so well, my effort would be like my trying to light a candle in blazing midday sun.

My only complaint on this one would be that the chin could be more squared, and the teeth look a little too big. I am no expert though. As others have said, it is very refreshing to see a spino with a closed mouth.

Closing the mouth on a Spino is pretty difficult though..in concept at least. It's hard to figure just where those big choppers go on such a thin skull. I've seen the mouth mostly closed but artists tend to try and make the teeth of the lower jaw go into the upper. That might work when they are young but as they grow those teeth get quite large. There just isn't space in the upper pallete for them from what I can tell.

The lower teeth at the front of the snout, projecting up through the narrow part of the upper jaw may be a bit big(the rest are correct size according to the reference materials i had)- to be honest I had planned on replacing those with some smaller ones I made out of epoxy that are slightly smaller when i mold the piece- I think Blade mistook the critique of the teeth size for critique of the way the mouth is closed- Spinos have that narrowing of the upper snout right where the big teeth are at the front portion of the lower jaw-just seems to me that would be where the large teeth on the lower jaw would go, in that narrow part of the upper jaw- there is no where for those large lower jaw teeth to go in the upper jaw pallete--there is no way a spino had lips either in my opinion after making this- tried to find some sort of reference for a closed mouth spino, or a photo of a skull with the jaws closed- all I found were some very poor renderings, that just fudged the whole issue of the front of the snout-in fact most artists seem to not even look at what fossil there is of the snout when they represent a spinosaurus-they might make a half arsed notch in the snout, but they dont even seem to get that the snout gets very narrow at this nothch area, before widening back up at the tip of the snout-

I may have..I honestly after re-reading my post think I was just commenting in general how hard it is to get right..lol After building a Spino myself and I can easily see the problems others have there and how difficult the critter is.
I've had a devil of a time finding good references as well..besides Hartman's skeletal there isn't much.

Why does it need to be threatening ? lol VERY impressive Malcolm ! This is pretty big step up from your first pieces in terms of detail and and overall look. The paint scheme really fits well too, I like the dark washes that bring out the tiny detailing of the skin..quite impressive. What's his price ? I have high hopes now for that Suchomimus piece we had talked about ! ;D

Why does it need to be threatening ? lol You know many spinosaurus figures has that monstrous Jurassic park look to it, which is just strange. this shows the original fish hunter.

Wow! Easily my favorite in the line so far. I'm glad you didn't give it big crocodile scutes everywhere like so many reconstructions like to do, probably just because of the croc-like snout. To reiterate Blade's question - what will this lovely creature cost?
