Another collection completed! With the addition of pteranodon and ankylo, my Kinto collection is now complete! If you are not familiar, Kinto is a Japanese company that release mostly desktop models of prehistoric animals. A few years ago, they decided to release a set of 13 (14 if you count the two T-rex versions) vinyl dinosaur figures. Released under the official “Favorite” line ( not sure why, maybe they were hoping that the line will be a favorite!). In addition to the 13 figures, there is also an optional diorama-like stand for the pteranadon and plesio ( I dunno about this, your pleasio looks like it’s flying!) that you can purchase separately if you want.
The figures released are based mostly on their desktop models. The range of species represented is nothing spectacular, no new or obscure dino in this collection. The species chosen are the standard perennial offerings: T-rex (two version, a brown and a green), Allosaurus, Stegosaurus, Triceratops, Styracosaurus, Deinonychus, Pachyceplasaurus, ankylosaurus, Pteranodon, Plesiosaur, Brachiosaurus, Parasaurolopus, and Apatosaurus.
The figures are all well made and show remarkable details and textures. Poses are active, and all the bipedal animals can stand, perfectly balance, on their two feet.
The scale is mix, but mostly around the 1/80 scale. It’s really a shame; it would have been cool to have them all to scale with each other.
Despite their good accuracy and fine sculpting, the collection really did not take off as well as they had hoped. First, the figures were not widely available. Secondly, and I think one of the main reason for why the line never took off, is the price.
As far as toy figures go, these guys are expensive! They range from $11 for the ‘smaller” one to $25 for the “bigger” ones.
The price is the main reason why it took me so long to complete the collection. The sauropods are the most expensive at $21-25 a piece!
So, the next time anyone complains about sauropods being expensive, just look at these small guys!
After the first set, there were no more releases. There were plans to release more figures. If my memory is right, they even released a list of upcoming figures ( L&P even, I think had them up for a short time) but they were quickly, and abruptly, canceled. I think even the desktop models suffered since there were a bunch of new releases that were also canceled the last minute!
It’s really a shame; I’m not sure if the entire collection has been retired or if they are still in production. I know of only a handful of online store that still offers the complete set.
Learning from previous mistakes, I finally broke down and purchased the last missing figures before they completely disappear.
I’m glad that I did, the collection is truly a wonderful set. It ranks as one of the best collections ever produced. On the plus side, the collection is small, making it easier to try and complete.
The entire collection:
The lovely sauropods
The ceratopsians ;D
The armored ones
The trio ;D
Two version of T-rex ;D
Pterosaurs and Marine reptile ;D
Just because I forgot to include him in the group photo ( how could I forget one of my favorite figure!) the lovely Para! ;D
So there you have it, the entire Kinto Favorite Collection! ;D Get them now if you like the figures. I have a feeling they won't be around for very long
Truly worth every penny ;D
Bonus Feature:
Desktop Amargasaurus! ;D
A stunning piece of art! Truly the most beautiful Amarga I have ever seen
He is not a toy, it's part of their desktop series, one of the last to be released. Too bad the toy version never materialized. As most of you are aware of, the Kinto desktop models are not cheap. I had to buy this figure, it's just too beautiful to pass
