Can you actually show us where the spam is? Is it in a thread? Or did you click a link--in which case there is not much we can do about that.

Sorry about that. Sounds like either a glitch or you accidentally clicked the banner at the bottom of the page (this can happen if the page shifts mid-click). If it happens again you should be able to click 'back' in your browser and your text should still be there.

I had something similar happen---I came to the forum home page, and IMMEDIATELY I got thrown to a spam-ad-website, one of the ones that always say "you have every virus ever, please download our virus-cleaner program"---which themselves are usually viruses. I avoided this forum for a few days after that, as this style of virus-ad seems to be going around a lot lately. (saw it just 2 weeks ago on another forum)
I hadn't even clicked on a thread or post yet, merely coming to the forum index popped up the spam-virus-ad window.

hmm. well, for a basic defense, (not a complete solution to the problem, however) I would recommend first installing a good antivirus, as well as AdBlock Plus. when you install adblock, it... blocks adds. it prevents pop-up windows too. if you visit a website where you want to be able to see pop ups, adblock has a menu that lets you disable it for specific web pages of your choosing.

Now that I hear the problem, I realize--it is probably something that got onto your computers; there are several registry-affecting programs that will do that.

Not IMHO. It's exactly like what happened a few weeks ago at another forum, and that forum DID get a virus from an ad they were unknowingly hosting that evening and they got a lot of complaints.
Frankly, if there was something on my PC, I'd know about it--I built it from scratch and installed the OS myself, and tweaked the registry myself, and check running apps/programs a zillion times a day. I scan it often, and did several times after the incident on this forum. My PC is clean. (at least, so says Avast, Spybot, AdAware, and HijackThis)

Megaraptor - have you had issues too?
I'd like to hear from anybody else who has also encountered similar problems.
I noticed that links from the forum to ebay seem to have recently been hijacked. I don't know if this is Proboards doing or if we have been hacked. I need to look into it, but I wonder if it is related to the problems listed above.
