A young Southern water snake, Nerodia fasciata, found its way into the community pool this morning. Fortunately, the folks on hand were not vicious snake-killers, so I was able to take this little feller home, identify him, and then release him into the nearby creek. It's only about a foot long, so probably is only a few weeks old; adults may reach 5-6 times that size. Non-venomous, they feed primarily on Amphiuma (aquatic salamanders), fish, tadpoles and the like.

Thanks Himma! You have always been very complimentary, which I appreciate, and obviously you miss having wildlife in your neighborhood. Of course, if I told you I received about a dozen mosquito bites getting those last couple snake shots you might think otherwise! ;D Pix coming up sometime: Brenda the raccoon brings her kits by for a visit. Boy are they cute!!!! I didn't have my camera the first few times, and now they are nearly as big as she is, and so impossibly adorable I can't describe it. I'm lucky to have experienced a few of these moments, even if I didn't capture them on film. Hopefully I'll get some decent pictures sometime; as is appropriate, she is much more cautious when the young 'uns are around. Stay tuned...

Can i have the moth? I let it go, to the protest of others who insisted I keep it and mount it. But perhaps there is a figure of one somewhere?

I had to let it go, as moths they live for less than a week and don't even feed during that time. I consider a treat just to have seen one.

I should go on a wildlife trip, but the most I see when I have my cmaera on me are sparrows, crows, magpies & the occasional wallaby. I did save an echidna once, though. The kids in the street were crowding around it and were about to bash it with a large stick. Luckily I was passing by and had my wicket-keeper's gloves on (I was on my way home from playing cricket) so I pushed through the crowd, grabbed it, got whacked a couple of times and took it to the creek and set it down beside a gum tree. I have also seen a fair few hawks (usually after my team, the Hawks, have won) and wombats, and my fair share (and everyone else's fair share, too) of cockatoos.Next time I go somewhere wildlifey (is that even a word?) I'll take photos.

When I was a kid in Germany, I'd find a hedgehog under every, well, hedge. ;D They're not closely related to echidnas, although they do look similar. In German, they're called Igel (pronounced like the bird, eagle) or Stacheligel (pronounced like, ah fuhgeddaboutit ) Love to see some wombats too.

Okay, here's an anole eating a moth. Nothing special about that, EXCEPT, I went out to get the mail and the anole was an inch or two from a moth that was perched on the side of the house by the front door, oblivious to its surroundings. The lizard was ready to pounce, but was scared when I came out and ran away into the bushes several feet away. About a minute later, after I was back in the house with the usual crappy delivery of bills and credit card offers, I saw through the window the anole came running back up, snatched the moth, and dashed back into the foliage. A nice example of memory in a small lizard.

Thanks for reminding me> Brenda and the Brendaletts are EXTREMELY skittish, which is just as well. She has 4 kits, all of which are identifiable by color and behavior; nonetheless they scamper at the slightest disturbance. I have only gotten a few pictures, I gotta go and check which are worthwhile posting here. I leave scraps out for them about once a week, away from the house, near the woods boundary. I'm still trying to catch that d**n rat that's living in my grilll!!!!! BTW, it's a live-trap; I've caught rats in it before w/o injury, then I release them a few miles away in an undeveloped area. I've caught a few copperheads and done the same for them. Anyhoo, I'll post some Brendalet pix by tonite!
