Hi all, I'm new to you and confess, I'm no lurker...just found the forum this week, although I see one of the mods is from Portland too - cool. As with most of you, I suppose, I'm new/old to all things dinosaurs. I was a little squirt when Sinclair sent around that awesome Worlds Fair dinosaur exhibit (if you don't know about it, I feel sad for you, it was freaking cool, at least in the 60's!) My avatar is the Trex head from that exhibit, and somewhere I have a photo of myself camped atop a miniature brontosaurus from that exhibit, plaid shorts and all, haha. I have a few of the wax "mold-a-rama" dinosaurs from that exhibit still, although sadly not the full set, thanks to a short BB gun phase during which I had the bright idea to use those figures as prey in a backyard dinosaur hunt...sigh. I also grew up in the Chicago area, so the Field Museum of Natural History was a major influence. I drug my folks there to be able to soak up the dinosaur exhibits ala Calvin and Hobbes at least twice a year. I went back about 5 years ago to see the newly re-designed dino-wing - very nice - and got some newer (and smaller) replicas of the same mold-a-rama wax figures. At least they still had the amazing Charles Knight murals that I studied and imagined in my mind while growing up. What I wouldn't have given to step into any one of those scenes (behind a protective bubble, of course!). I'll try to attach one of the murals with a Tylosaur, in case you haven't seen those. Anyway, I'm a nearly half-century old dad of a 10-yr-old now. My wife and I have had some fun collecting fossils, although that was during a 10-yr stint in Texas where there is lots of old rock (I've got a few mammoth tooth fossils that washed up after storms along the gulf - now that's my idea of beach-combing!) Fossil hunting in western Oregon sucks...it's mostly basalt-covered. We all like all things animal (I'm a restoration scientist working for a regional government in Portland), especially dinosaurs. Closest I ever got to being the paleontologist I fully expected to be as a kid was to do a doctorate on endangered shorebirds...which links me in there somewhere, I suppose. I fell on this forum after seeing the Kaiyodo dinotale figures (which I am really digging) and then googling them. I'm hoping to read a bit more here and look at some of your collections and figure out what else we might want to collect. I'm wide open for suggestions. I tend to prefer realistic looking things, so would love to hear about other lines of figures that you think I should check out. Otherwise, just wanted to stop in early and say "hey!" Attachments:

Hello and welcome to the forum! To be honest I'm excited to see someone here living in the same area as me ;D If you like Kaiyodos, this is a good site to use to keep track of what you end up collecting and what you still need: www.dinosaurcollector.150m.com/kaiyodo.htm Be warned, they're addictive! Hope to see you around the forum, and I hope you're enjoying the break in the hot weather we've been having as much as I am, lol

Hello and welcome!
I can testify as well as anybody else here that the Kaiyodo Dinotales are dangerously addictive. You will also find that the more you explore about the countless lines, the more hopelessly you will succumb. ;D Take heed! ;D

I love Portland! Have been here only a decade or so, but it's been the best 10-yrs of my life. I miss a lot about the midwest (bugs, herps, fossils, good hot dogs/sweet corn/tomatoes, etc.) but not the weather. Plus, I spent 10 years in Texas and almost died from the heat/humidity, and I was on the coast the whole time! We actually had a house on Larch Mountain that was 2 acres of heaven. 80 yr-old forest and two streams, lots of snow in the winter and never above 80, as I like it. But we had to move into the city to get our son into a good school (he's in 5th grade at the math/science magnet school Winterhaven, out near you) and reduce our commute, which was killing us. Still, I miss that place. Thanks for the link, that's what I was looking for as the only other site I had had photos just through series 5 I think. I'll read that. Are they still making them? Any other similar figures I should consider?

Thank you for the welcome. What lines do you like best, besides dinotales? Where is the best place to buy them? Thanks!

For similar little figures, try Kabaya and Colorata!

I was going to suggest other Japanese companies, just as Sepp did, too. But where to really begin in terms of other recommendations! I think we would be here forever. I myself have only recently learned about a whole heap of manufacturers (I only joined the forum a little over a month ago). I think simply being here and looking at members' collections help. By the way, Totoro, are you an admirer of the animations of Hayao Miyazaki?

By the way, Totoro, are you an admirer of the animations of Hayao Miyazaki? Hey Himmapaan, Hehe, yeah I love all of the Miyazaki stuff. Sad to think he's probably done after Ponyo. I have just started looking around the site and have been most impressed by some of the "custom" figures that other members here have made and reproduced for others! Wow, how cool! I will probably be trying to support those efforts where financially possible, as many of those pieces look incredibly beautiful and life-like and seem to have had a lot of research put into them. I had no idea I'd discover that when I started looking here!

I'm a fan of Miyazaki too. (I only joined the forum a little over a month ago). But...you're a senior member? The forum 'ranks' change according to the number of posts, and I'm afraid I have been embarrassingly talkative since joining. (A rather stark contrast to real life, where I hardly speak at all, especially as my work is so solitary. But that may be the very reason for it; a kind of displacement. ;D) I'm pretty surprised myself that I flew from being a 'New Member' to 'Senior Member' in a very short time. I usually wouldn't have so much time to spend online either, but I happen to be near the end of a project at the moment. Give it a year or two though, and I predict I'll have simply become a lurker by then. ;D

Yeah, the avatar will probably become a totoro at some point, but when in Rome... Plus, I wanted to show a little of the Sinclair Dinoland that I was describing. Anyway, you're right, we can hope Miyazaki dusts himself of for at least 1 more. Maybe that one would have dinosaurs? Thanks for the welcome and links!
