I'd seen this vid before - very odd indeed - I recall some of the comments likening the beasty to the alien in the movie of the same name, a bit of a stretch I thought, but it is other-worldly.

Jaw protrusion (shooting your jaw forward) is really common in fishes, but few do it in such a disturbing way.

I think it is stupid when they put these sensitive sharks into captivity. If those aquariums have learned anything, it is that most deep water and pelagic sharks don't do well in captivity(That frill shark, this goblin shark, the numerous great whites, etc)

Then they should be fine. ;D

Nobody captured the goblin shark. Just like that frilled shark, where it wound up in the shallows on its own. And it is cool to see these freaks of nature!

Weren't they both captured and put in captivity, only to die a few hours later? I thought it said that in the news thing I read about it...

I must have missed that--yes, they were. The problem is that they really don't do well in shallow water, but of course they don't do well in captivity either.
This isn't like when public aquaria purposefully go afer pelagic species just ot get them on display--it was a matter of circumstance.
