Genyornis would be a cool figure as well (thats what the megalania is after there) I am just partial to the big guys like Dromornis stirtoni - Here is a picture. And titanis walleri... Another rendition, from WWPB - Confuciusornis sanctis - a primative "bird". Hesperornis www.dmr.nd.gov/ndfossil/Poster/niobrara/images/as%2004%20copy.gifHesperornis mc nuggets, to go.

Here is where i am at with this project at this point- again at this point i am just at the planning stage- subject to change as I shuffle this all through my head- but i do want to get started on some of this soon-it is cold out in chicago and i need more projects while i am inside more -1) DINOSAUR PLAYSET-I will come out with a set of toy dinos this set would be a revisiting of marx sets, dinosaurs in paper bags that come in a corrugated cardboard box with a lid that flips up that has a real cool graphic in like two colors- dinosaurs will be larger than the Marx figures but still in this range, these will have some of the basic, tried and true dinos like T-Rex, Triceratops, Stegosaurus, but i want to concentrate on unusual dinos, ones that aren't out there as toys right now. The dinos will be cast in various basic colors (none that seem too garish or unnatural) with painted patterns airbrushed on them with hand picked out paint details-eyes, teeth, claws, horns, etc. -basically toy paint jobs. This set of dinos will be relatively in scale to each other, you know that there are always some that have to be out of scale if they are to be included in a set of dinos. This line will have accessories that are relatively in scale to this line- plants, rocks, trees. I am mulling the idea of having like a plastic layout playmat- you know what i mean? Those old sets used to come with a printed playmat that had green and brown -blue water river running across the middle- to set up your set on. 2)PREHISTORIC CREATURES PLAYSET- This will have all of the criteria of the dino set above only it will have mammals, birds, amphibians, marine reptiles- anything not dinosaurs. Accessories would reflect the different theme. 3)COLLECTOR LINE- These would be a line of ongoing special edition type toys. Dinosaurs and other prehistoric critters, even some hominids for my friend DinoObcessed-that deserve some extra attention-that would be at a larger scale with more detail in the sculpting and the painting. These would be relatively to the same scale as each other with exceptions as stated before. 4)DIORAMAS- These would be individual, separate 'collector' sets, the difference from the other two sets being they will be basically dioramas of different periods or events- devonian reef, coal forest, tarpit scene, maybe a paleo hunter mammoth hunt. These diorama sets should come in boxes with clear plastic fronts and a scene printed on the inside back with the pieces all displayed inside.
I will probably start off with a few of the larger COLLECTOR LINE toys while I am developing the two sets, or the diorama sets. i want these sets to look like a set from the past, the only difference being it will be of more modern standards as far as the sculpting and such. Details of production are yet to be determined.
Here's an idea- why don't we put it to a vote- which critters should go into the two sets- DINOSAUR PLAYSET, PREHISTORIC PLAYSET. Pick ten critters (is ten enough? I would have to check on how many dinos a marx set came with)for each set. Could someone set up a poll or whatever, i am not familiar enough yet with how these things work. I kind of want these to be sets designed by everyday collectors if that makes sense.

Lets make it 15 per set.

The 15 critters of each set type, with the most votes would go into the two sets.

For a poll to be made, there have to be a set number of choices for people. What you could do is accept suggestions, and then create a poll. My 15: Dinosaurs: Irritator Shantungosaurus Mononykus Segnosaurus Alamosaurus Mymoorapelta Saurophaganax Diceratops Falcarius Tsintosaurus Appalachisaurus Coelophysis Gigantoraptor Incisivosaurus Anchisaurus
Non-dinosaurs: Epicyon Teleoceras Ischyrocyon Barylambia Toxodon Xiphactinus Tusoteuthis Dolichorhynchops Globidens Desmatosuchus
Sorry, I can only think of 10 right now...

Not to sound harsh, but besides Tyrannosaurs, Ceratosaurs, Allosaurs, and possibly a Titanosaur, I don't care what dinosaurs they come out with. I just have fun collecting them. That was my top 4 though. Actually a good Dromeosaurus figure would be a must too.

Hmm.
Dinosaurs: !!!Irritator!!! Masiakosaurus Dilophosaurus (it hasn't really been done well) Coelophysis(ditto) Afrovenator Carcharodontosaurus Tyrannotitan
Prehistoric Playset: (sort of a Devonian-Carboniferous-early Permian theme) Xenacanthus (have it slightly coiled to illustrate how it was more eel-like -- there's a fantastic painting of it like this) Sphenacodon Cotylorhynchus Eryops Crassigyrinus Bothriolepis a Trilobite or two an Ammonite (maybe an orthocone?) Tiktaalik Hyneria Meganeura Cacops Titanichthys Cephalaspis

Oh, and I think Irritator would be a fantastic Collector Line piece. Spinosaurids are awesome, and ones not named Spinosaurus or Baryonyx don't seem to get much attention.

For your first playset since you want some common animals I would do a Hell Creek set. I would include the two most common dinosaurs from Hell Creek Triceratops, and Edmontia ( we really could use a good one). Also Tyrannosaurus, Torosaurus, Anatonian, Ankylosaurus, Pachycephlosaurus, Parasaurolophus, Strutiomimus sedens ( Hell creek had the biggest Strutiomimus's), and Quetzalcoatus (only one bone was found and it may just be a relative but it would work) would be good ones to choose. Dromaeosaurus and Trodon would probably be to small to work with this group. ;D

I sell a real nice life size model of Xanacanthus that Richard Rush Studios made for the large Coal Forest diorama that they made in the 70's for the WIlliam Penn museum in Harrisburg, PA. It really was a strange fish, with its unicorn horn on top of it's head. Some of these suggestions are species that I have models of in my museum model line. I like the idea of making toy versions of these. I would have a real hard time sculpting even a toy Dilophosaurus without thinking of the Rush dilo which is still the best sculpted version of it I have seen yet. The small maquette that Roger sculpted is actually better i think than the full size one he did based on the maquette.

Ah, the picture of Xenacanthus I'm talking about is in "Discovering Fossil Fishes" by John Maisey, page 102, plate 36. Aha - here's the pic! It's Orthacanthus, a xenacanthid shark: Here's another, less exciting picture:

Ammonites are strictly Jurassic-Cretaceous. At best, early ceratitic ammonoids are late Paleozaoic.

Whoo! Hyneria, that would make a cool fig, along with the rest. I would love a set like that!

I knew that they were nautiloids, guess I just forgot to change the text. Ah well.
