"Surfing news reports it looks like the genome includes some genes in common with birds. To me that would imply that birds split off from reptiles before mammals did. ?" Once again, like chicken rex, the skimpy little report does not tell the whole story. The their sex chromosomes share extensive homology to those of birds - They do not "have bird genes". This suggests that ancient mammal-like reptile ancestors may have had similar bird-like sex chromosomes and a similar bird-like sex determination system. (From here.....http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2008-05/cshl-pgu050108.php) Also - "The chicken genome was chosen because it represents a group of egg-laying animals, including extinct reptiles, which passed on much of their DNA to the platypus and other mammals over the course of evolution." www.sciencecentric.com/news/08050749.htm
