As promised, the next installment. I thought it would be fun to post completed collection, not just to showcase the figures, but as a reference guide for those who are new or for those who are thinking of acquiring the figures. I think it's great to see a completed line with all of the figures together instead of scattered in various post. I hope you all agree and enjoy each one ;D
The WWD documentary movie is, perhaps, the best dinosaur movie ever produced. Even now, after more than 10 years since it first aired, it's is still hugely popular. It's state of the art CGI animation really brought our beloved dinosaur and other prehistoric animals to life.
Like any highly successful movies, it, too, has it's own line of toy figures. The official WWD toy figures were produced and released by Toyway.
There were 12 figures that were the official release: T-Rex, Allosaurus, Torosaurus, Iguanodon, stego, Ophthalmosaurus, liopleurodon, utahraptor, leaellynasaurus, polacanthus, anklylo, and postosuchus. In addition to the twelve figures, there was also the Ornithocheirus that was pulled from the lineup and later just released as a magazine premium giveaway. This pterosaur is almost mythical, one of the hardest figure from the line to find and acquire.
The figures in the collection are of mixed scale. In general, they are a bit bigger than the standard 1:40 scale.
There are some winners in this collection, the lioplerurodon is one of the best. The details on the figures are good. The choice of coloration are subtle and very much like what you see in the movie.
Perhaps the most common complain about the line is that the figures are posed in a very stiff way. The necks, arms, legs, tails, flippers, wings, all are straigth. You don't get any signs of motion at all. It reminds me of computer illustrations before they animate them!
Overall, the collection is worht acquiring. It helps that the line is not very big, makes it easier to complete. Some figures are harder to acquire than others. The Iguanodon, toro,Stego, and polacanthus are some of the easier to acquire figures from the set. It was rumoured that there was plans to release a different iguanodon version, the brown and white striped one. But it never materialized.
The T-rex, allo, utharaptor, anklyo, and the small leaellynasaurus (originally sold and packaged with the utharaptor) are not as easily obtained, but they do pop up once in a while at a reasonable price. The T-rex, like the Battat, also comes in two version: original and snowshoe. What's up with T-rex and snowshoes? ?;o)
The T-rex have blood painted on it's mouth! The amount of blood is highly variable, I have 3 T-rex, all have different amount, some more than the others.
The most difficult to acquire and can command high $ is the liop, opthalmo, posto. The ornithuchairus is almost impossbile to acquire, and I imagaine, will command top $ if it ever becomes available.
So here they are, the completed WWD collection!
The entire collection ;D
Mighty Liopleurodon...
Classic Stego...
A pair of Torosaurus
Built like a tank, Ankylo ;D
another classic, Iguanodon
A pair of rowdy Utahraptors ;D Look at how long the tail is on this figure.
A pair of Postosuchus ( is this the first postosuchus figure ever released?)
The diminutive Leaellynasaurus ;D He travelled all the way down from Mexico ;D
Big Al
A pair of spiky Polacanthus
Lovely pair of Ophthalmosaurus ;D
And the bad boy himself, T-Rex ;D
And his buddies ;D Two versions, and check out those bloody mouths!
Bonus Feature
So, like everyone else, the WWD line also had babies ;D
Unfortunately, it's not what it really sounds like. By that I mean the Figures are not official ToyWay figures. They are actually repackaged Safari figures! So, I was not really sure about it at first. It was until I got the box that I realized they were all Safari ;D
So Safari and Toyway did collaborate on producing an "official" BBC WWD set of baby figures ;D The Box was provided by Toyway and the figures, all five of them, was provided by Safari! Clever ;D
Well, there you have it, the complete line of WWD figures! You can check out and droll over Bucketfoot's photos of his Ornithocheirus ;D
Tune in next time for a look at the complete, "unofficial" WWD figures from TS Toys ;D
Happy hunting! ;D
