Okay, so these aren't quite dinos....
Does anyone know if there have been replicas of the freshwater fish commonly referred to as a pike? I'm also interested in a slightly more prehistoric fish, the gar - any replicas of those?

Which is sad, because I've always wanted one (after a Polypterus, which kaiyodo obliged a few years back). As for pike, a detailed figure was made by Bullyland until a few years ago, but they are now discontinued.

Does anyone have a picture (or heaven forbid, one to trade) of the Bullyland pike?

Does anyone have a picture (or heaven forbid, one to trade) of the Bullyland pike? Well, I have a picture. But I'm not too likely to part with it (there were several in the set, but the only other one I have is the eel).

:/ I think Kaiyodo/Yujin have been spoiling me when it comes to paintjob quality.

There is a gar made by kinto. But there is a not-so-good spinosaurus connected to it...

Depending on what you want it for, there are also wooden lures made of them. : Sadly, that's about it--I have been hoping for a decent replica one for many years.

Maybe someday Colorata will expand their "fossil fish" set to include a gar and bowfin. One can dream...
I still wish they'd made an African lungfish instead of an Australian.one -- fin-tenctacles are cooler than fins.
Oh, and while we're on the subject, have you seen Colorata's new deep sea fish and coral reef fish sets?

Oh, and while we're on the subject, have you seen Colorata's new deep sea fish and coral reef fish sets? Those sets are on the way right now! As I have told others, I have a source that is reasonable. PM me for the details (I am uncomfortable just posting his email on the board). He is selling them on ebay, but really, there is less waiting this way, and no ebay fees for him. And yeah, I would really like to see more 'ancient' fish represented. The Colorata fossil fish set is great (of course I have that one), plus the odd Kaiyodo/Glico/Yowies etc. figure. Meaning that I have arrowanas, arapaima, bichirs, sturgeons, and aussie lungfish, but I would really like a gar, bowfin, pantodon, mormyrid, erpetoichthys, paddlefish, tarpon, etc.

Or you could get a pet gar! Really, long nose gar are actually very nice pets. Surprisingly docile.

I'm not big on keeping wild fish as pets (as opposed to aquacultured ones), and big predatory fish require a lot of tank space and a lot of care. Much easier to have a plastic replica, especially since you can't own them all

Oh, and I do have *some* fish, though they're quite the opposite of prehistoric - I have a tank of dwarf pufferfish that are very fun

Elastolin made a teeny little Pike figure too, although they've been out of production for quite some time.

A friend of mine keeps a small Gar, but his tank is 1,000 gallons. I cannot remember the species unfortunately.
Kuni, I have seen various Gar replicas. They are fishing decorations, but their material was similar to PVC. They were roughly 12 inches long, and resembled Alligator Gar. Next time I visit Port Aransas, Texas, I can possibly check their price.

1K gallons for a gar sounds about right. They're nontrivial to keep.
Thanks Tyrannax, but I don't really have the space for big replicas -- it's all I can do to keep the smaller replicas in check as it is....

No problem, just let me know if you're every interested.

As someone that kept a couple of spotteds for years, I can tell you that isn't true. I had them in a 160 gallon indoor pond (along with 4 Polypterus). They were around 2 feet. I later gave them to someone with a larger fish tank when we kept moving around. Perhaps you are thinking of Atractosteus species, which are indeed much larger and require more space.

Well, indoor ponds are sort of a special case since they're so much wider than a normal fish tank. A 160 gallon fish tank would be torture for a large-ish gar. Even then, multiple gars and 4 polypterus seems like a lot for a pond that size.
