I figures before I take off for a week again, I should just post this one. Its been delayed mostly since I was not able to round up all of the figures Also, I got sidetracked by the trilogy Devonian/Permian/Triassic. Anyway, its long overdue, so I'm posting it even if the pictures are not complete ( Still can't find the Ichtyo, Liop, and whale! ). I will try again to search for the MIA figures when I return and post pictures of them to complete the visual part, that is unless someone else post pictures of them first, that would be sweet
So here are the cast of characters in the Invicta line:
Apatosaurus, Baryonyx, Blue whale,Brachisaurus,Cetiosaurus,Dimetrodon,Diplodocus,Glyptodon,Ichtyosaurus,Iguanodon,Lambeosaurus,Mamenchisaurus,Megalosaurus,Muttaburrasaurus,Plesiosaur (elasmosaurus),Pliosaur ( Liopleuradon),Pteranodon,Scelidosaurus,Stegosaurus,Stenonychosaurus (Troodon),Triceratops,T_rex, and Woolly Mammoth.
The grandfather of them all! This is the line that standardized and popularized the 1/40 scale that future collections followed.
Everyone, by now, should be aware and perhaps owns some invicta figures. Released in the 70’s, the line is still considered one of the best ever produced.
Released by Invicta for the BMNH, the collection has some truly unique species never before seen as toy figures. The Invicta Baryonyx, Cetiosaurus, Megalosaurus, Lambeosaurus,Muttaburassaurus, Liopleorodon, Mamenchisaurus, were all first. Some found fame (Liopleurodon, Baryonyx), others remained obscure ( until CollectA released a few this year, their comeback so to speak) but all of them made their official debut as toy figures in the Invicta collection. The Stenonychosaurus or Troodon is the one figure that was not to scale with the collection. It is larger than the others and it was the only one that came with a based attached to the figure. On top of that, it has a very short lived release; the figure was quickly pulled from production due to copyright issues. Anyone here have a clue what the story is behind it? What figure was it based on?
The trio of mammals, Glyptodon, Mammoth, and Blue whale, are odd inclusions.
Simple designed, subtle details and solid colors truly make the figures very classy.
The figures were popular despite lack of bright colors and patters. All the figures were released unpainted for a long time. The ROM and Kleinweika figures have striking resemblance to the Invicta line style.
It was not until the serious treat from the newly emerged Safari and Battat prehistoric figures that Invicta decided to paint their figures. By then it was too late, Safari was well established as the new dominant company in the toy figure industry. The Battat collection, riding the wave of positive review and heralded as one of the best prehistoric toy collection ever produce, became the prehistoric collection de jour.
In the end, after decades of being the favorite, the entire Invicta collection of both unpainted and painted figures inevitably went extinct, paving the way for Companies like Bullyland, Schleich, CollectA/Procon to try and make their mark.
The unpainted figures are still widely available except for a few like the Lambeosaurus and Troodon which remains hard to find. They overshadowed their Toyway BMNH replacement figures, perhaps contributing to its early retirement.
To this day, the Invicta Collection is still beloved by both new and old collectors alike.
Each figures truly withstood the test of time both in their accuracy and popularity.
