And yes, I'm anti-capitalist. Capitalism has f**ked up this world severely. Communism has too though. Well, you youngsters are really trying to get my goat, but I won't bite (actually having removed the LARGE hook from my mouth via 'post modification') "KISS ME YOU FOOL" Chill out man, I'm not trying to get into a political debate with you, since it's obvious that would waste both our times. I'm just telling you how I think it is, communism and capitalism both suck. No need to get all upset over somebody's opinion (which you seem to do quite often given how you reacted when you read what I thought about Avatar). I wouldn't call myself a youngster (being 24). How old are you? You make yourself sound like somebody who's been around for like 80 years and doesn't think much of young people with different (political) opinions.

Roselaar - Sorry for the crankiness in my previous incarnation. I have sworn off political topics for good. As far as my age, it is exactly twice yours, so allow me a little liberty there ...
As far as not thinking much of young people with different ********** opinions (there's that naughty word again), well, that is not QUITE true.
You see, being the opinionated curmudgeon that I am, and getting to an age where I frankly no longer care what people think, it would be more accurate to say that I don't think much of ALL PEOPLE with different ******** opinions, to be accurate...
But - we're here on the topic of Avatar, so a few observations:
My prediction that it would make more $$$ in its second week of release than in its first week has been borne out as truth. And, it might even go up a bit more this weekend too - that word of mouth buzz, you know....
Up to nearly $300M in the US and $760M world-wide. So I guess all the Cameron-haters who predicted doom for this film are eating their hats and chewing their carpets at this time.
I'm gonna go see it for a third time this coming week. Maybe alone so I can focus on the on-screen goings-on better .....

I saw it today in imax 3D. Let me say that usually when a movie gets a lot of hype and people constantly say how fantastic it is before I get to see it, I go into it with a standard already set (which I did for Avatar as well) and every time it never meets that standard because to me, it was overhyped. Avatar is the first movie in a long time where this did NOT happen. It was everything i heard and more. Best movie I have seen in a long time.
It was a 250million dollar remake of Fern Gulley still but eh who cares.

I probably won't go see Avatar- doesn't interest me other than the technical aspects- I guess the main thing is I can't get past the blue cat people= Marge Simpson from the halloween episode where she is turned into a cat in 'The House Of Pain' ala Dr. Moreau-the design just seems so obvious- "let's make them cute like cats- eveyone will instincitvely find them appealing" the design just seems kind of trite to me- the other critters look cool otherwise -but to tell the truth, these type of movies aren't my bag- I tend to watch more what we call here in the U.S. 'foreign' films- onesthat study human nature and such and usuallly tell a good story- I bet without even seeing this movie, i could guess the plot and the characters - these big special effects movies are like paintings that are technically superb but have no soul, or musicians that can play a million notes lightening fast, but could learn from Neil Young that you can play a one note solo that has more soul than all the shredders out there who all sound the same- technical brilliance is not in of itself necessarily great art- but movies are just for entertainment and i am sure this movie fits that bill- plus as far as sci-fi movies go, I prefer less fantasy type imagery- recycled 'Yes' album covers looking stuff, I prefer sci fi movies that are like this clip- I'll take big robots shooting apart cities anytime-lol I hope this guy makes a full length movie based on this short he made for 300.00 -landing a 30 million movie deal of which I think he'll get 1 million- www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dadPWhEhVkJust wantedto add that i am probably not the best to judge sci fi movies- I walked out of ET- too syrupy for me- it started out with a great premise- an alien stranded on esrth but went south almost immediately in my opinion- I couldn't take it-

Yes, the N'avi turned me off when I saw the trailers. But they grew on me once I saw the film.

That is one COOL short film! WOW! War of the World and ID4 themes! P.S. You ought to go see Avatar if for no other reason than to experience being "in" a movie owing to the revolutionary 3D. BTW, you are mistaken about the Na'vi being like 'catpeople'. They look nothing of the sort. More like an outerspace cross between and African and Amerindian tribe, just blue and 12 feet tall. Plus Sigourney Weaver is in it (*SLURP*) - what more reason do you need??

They look nothing like cats, except the eyes, the ears, nose and tendency to show their teeth and hiss at people....

Hey guys, I haven't read ANY of this thread, but I'm just here to say that I saw the film last night in 3d, and.....It's my new favorite movie ever made. It completely blew me away, the effects, the battles, everything was just amazing. I'm definitely going to see it again in theaters.

the blue furries were kind of dull..
No movie should ever beat The Dark Knight or Jurassic Park.

Even if the acting was just okay and even if the story was just a 250million dollar remake of Fern Gulley, the reality is that yes, because of the effects, it blew me away and is thus considered one of the best movies of all time by many people.
Personally I liked it a lot better than Dark Knight. I still like JP better but that's because I am biased about dinosaurs.

I had a bad feeling at the start, like "man, I'm not gonna like this movie".
Then after several minutes, night came to the planet and everthing on-screen was A-W-E-S-O-M-E. I totally LOVED the movie and was taken to a different level of conciousness.
Then, after many hours (why the hell movies are this long today???) I started got bored.
Then after many hours more, they had a big great battle I actually didn't care a bit as I've seen things like that many many times before in many many movies.
Then the movie ends and... goddam, couldn't they have chosen a WORST song for the ending credits? Too bad.
I take 30 minutes of the movie, pure art.
The rest (like 2 hours), I consider it total useless crap without any merit or value.

Would it have blown you away if the effects weren't all that good? Effects are never what I like about a movie to be honest. I enjoyed the creatures, battles, and humanoid characters. The plot was interesting as well. I could care less if similar messages have been constructed in other films. There is not a single movie in existence that is like this. I enjoyed every bit of it and must agree with Theri. My favorite movie.

Hmm...I'll throw in my 2 cents...
Wasn't going to go initially. I had a few friends go and make such a fuss over it, they wanted me to go see it. Finally did. They were totally blue cat people - I wanted to pat them on the heads and provide them with wiskas snacks. There, I said it. It had some Fergully moments, but then again, I liked Ferngully. I also thought of the Simpsons that Dinonikes mentioned, along with Futurama - Anyone else recall the Futurama episode with Amys parents on Mars, and the blue native people who lived in its interior ?
The moment they went to fly on the Banshee, I had this "Hey, just like the Skybax" they bond to a single rider and - whoa - a moment straight from Dinotopia, and as soon as the Leonopteryx was introduced, I thought about the albino pterosaur from the same, and knew he'd be on the thing eventually. The dino roars from JP were there, as were bits of hyena calls, and other animals sounds. (shockingly no "kookaburra jungle background" - usually a Hollywood standard) The plot was fairly predictable in spots. I liked hearing unobtanium mentioned, made the geek in me smile.
Horridus, I also loved Quarich - If he got any *badder* he was going to implode with *badness* - made me laugh quite a bit. That said, I was "relieved" when he died at the end.
My feelings on the film in total ? I loved it, and I'd say there's a good chance I might go see it again, I max Style. The whole film was full of eye candy, and the planet was beautiful and breathtaking. The creatures were very different and stunning, and seemed to "fit" with one another, and like dinodinkes was saying, they seemed to have "life". I read no spoilers, and just went blind, and it was superb. Each new turn I was looking for new critters and things to see. As for the Liberal, Earth & Native hugging plot ? Being part indigenous & rather liberal, and an environmental educator by profession, I eat that stuff up. IMO, people need to be blasted with such things for the effect to sink in sometimes. Blade-of-the-Moon, I also particularly liked the line about earth having no green left...
I liked the critters in the film so much, I went out and bought some of the beasties - Right after seeing it, I said to my friend Dave, who I was with, "Hey, I need that flying red thing, I wonder if someone is going to make some decent figures from this movie ?" And so... My 2 favorites, the Leonopteryx and the Thanator are now on my shelf, along with a 3 pack of smaller figures - 2 very neat looking Viperwolves and Jake Sully in Avatar form holding a gun and a flame.
My local Walmart had the Leonopteryx for 26$, and the mixed set and other critters for 14$ - and the small humans/Na'vi were 8$ the larger ones of those, not in scale with the beasts, 14$. The 2 figures I purchased are very nice, and display well. 8$ for the little humanoid figures seems like a whole lot of money to me, so I'll pass on those for now.
No, IMO, It didn't beat the LOTR films, or JP, but its up there among films I really, really like.

O wow, CCM I never considered the dinotopia similarities but now that I think of it you are totally right.
"(shockingly no "kookaburra jungle background" - usually a Hollywood standard)"
Don't forget the other classic "jungle" sound, the call of the loon. They seem to use that a lot as well but I don't remember hearing it in AVATAR.

Haha, yes, you are right It sometimes gets to me hearing bellbirds, peacocks, loons and kookaburras in the same "jungle" or "spooky place" for a film, or when I dead on recognize an animals call that is used in place of another (every movie raptor apparently screams like a Red Tailed Hawk), but I have to remind myself its just a movie, and most people don't recognize these sounds, and just let it be at that
