How I pronounce dinosaur names: I start off with the first one or two letters of the name, jumble the middle part into something that sounds english, and end with "saurus"

So... am I the only one saying "archaeo-(p)teryx" rather than "archae-op-teryx"? Being a bit of a language nerd, I find splitting the name into "old" and "wings" comes naturally...

I always pronounced the "P" in there.

I always pronounced the "P" in there. Me too. Although in retrospect, maybe I shouldn't have...we don't say 'p-terosaur'...

Par-uh-saur-OFO-lus for Parasaurolophus see here: also, Ankylosaurus can be pronounced: AN-kee-lo-saw-us or an-KIE-lo-saw-us, I use the second pronounciation.

Yeahhhhh that Clash of the Dinosaurs show was filled with all sorts of wrongness. The L def should go before the PH just like its spelled.

I used to pronounce Ankylosaurus , AN-kee-lo-saur-us when I was younger..at some point I heard it said an-KIE-lo-saur-us and now use that.
It's funny because I will pick up and look at my Def Dinosaurs one and still pronounce it as I did when I was little and played with it...it just runs into my head..but I see a new one and the correct name comes out. Both the same animal but the mental ties are different.

How do you guys pronounce Tupuxuara? I say it too-puck-zoo-ara. How about too pu or too poo swahra or maybe shwahra, it's South American Indian, I think, or Spanish or Portuguese or something.

Sideshow pronounces it Tup-i-huara, after the ancient Brazilian deity. And Sideshow is never wrong. What about Chasmosaurus, anyone?

Well, the Iberian 'g', 'j' and 'x' are pronounced like a guttural 'h' (velar fricative), so yes, that sounds right. I pronounce Chasmosaurus, 'KAS-mo-Saw-rus'.

That's what I suspect... which means I've been mispronouncing it all these years. No wonder they're always kicking me out of parties.

Yes, that's what I thought also, but when I looked it up it was pronounced "shwahra" although the Brazilians themselves might say "guttural 'h' " but not the pointy head paleontologists, who are never wrong! ;D

This is actually a really neat idea for a thread.
For me, Giganotosaurus has always been:
Ji-gah-not-o-saw-rus
The 'loaf-us' version of Parasaurolophus always makes my brain hurt when I hear it for some reason, although I'm sure it's probably equally as valid as the 'ol-oh-fus' version.
Deinonychus I've said as "die-non-ih-kus' for...most of my life. Ahem. For a long time I used to call it "Die-no-knickers". On reflection, I can understand why my mother laughed.
