I got 3 groups of dinosaur figure imports. Yes, I have to buy them all overseas. I'm sure all of you are now familiar with the Salvat figures. Well, I finally have some of them. It's interesting that Salvat went to all that trouble to copy other dinosaur figures, mostly Safari and Battat, but did not make any attempt to improve the figures, If anything they insulted the originals by producing figures that are really poorly made and unimaginative. The figures are slightly modified, mostly the head sculp, to avoid copy right. Other than that, the figures look so much like the original except the coloring is really BORING and poorly done. Each figure have their name, made in China, and Salvat Editores SE stamped underneath. The rarity of the figures is the only reason they are worth the trouble acquiring. [im g][/img] I finally got my BMNH diplodocus and a corythosaurus figures straight from England after trying to find the figures in the US to no avail. Interesting version of the diplodocus. We are used to two different diplodocus look: the classic, smooth backed, version that the majority of figures are based on and the spiked backed one, popularized by the BBC WWD series (as far as I know, only the TS toys diplodocus has it). The NHM Toyway figure combined both versions into one figure! The result is an odd looking diplodocus; from the head down to the hips is smooth, and from the hips all the way down to the tip of the tail has spikes! I ordered the diplo to add something new to my sauropod collection and corythosaurus just because I like duckbills, too. Other than that, I don't think the entire line is really worth spending $ on. The figures just look very amateurish compared to the Old Invictas and WWD figures. The figures are so stiff and lifeless looking, the details so poorly done. [im g][/img] The final set is from the Primeval line. I only got the birds and agnurognathus. I really like Hesperonis figure. A bit odd looking, but very much worth it. The Dodo looks funny, and so are the agnurognathus. Got the set for less $20 w/ the shipping, so not bad. [im g][/img]

Dang! At the time I wasn't interested, but now I'm jealous of the Salvat Elasmosaurus.
That's a huge flock of mini-pterosaurs!

[im g] [/img]
I've been thinking of getting that diplodocus. It's not great, but are there any other spike-backed diplo figures on the market? It's a pity the head looks like a sock puppet. Incidentally, they are technically within the realms of accuracy here. The few dorsal skin flaps found with diplodocus were near a series of tail vertebrae.

LOL! The head is funny looking! I agree, TS toys diplodocus is the only figure that I know of that has the dorsal spikes. If you are a sauropos fan like I am, the figure is an absolute must have to add to your collection. I got the BMNH figures from www.everythingdinosaur.com/index.php?cPath=2_13 in the UK. It was a challenge getting them since you have to deal with a person directly, set up a time to call ( a huge challenge considering the different time zones!). But the guy, Mike, who helped me was really good. That's the only way you can get the figure if your in the USA like me. The figures shipped really fast and they give you the option of taking it out of packaging to save you lots of $$$ in shipping. I think my total converted to US $ came to about $52 for 2 diplo and the cory, so not bad at all. The Salvat, many of you may remember, was won from ebay. The Primeval I got from ebay also with buy it now option. The Primeval was sold as 2 sets (which I got both) consisting of one Dodo, Hesperonis, worm (you can see one next to the hesperonis feet), and 3 Pterosaurs.

We actually got quite far, so you mentioning his name reminded me I should contact him again. He is friendly indeed

The Corythosaurus is kinda nice, though. But...these companies...need to start making better dinosaurs.

The Salvat ones don't seem very interesting to me...They have ripped-off Carnegie and Battat and NOT in a good way IMHO That grey Dippy...It's not that bad, except for the head...Geez,it looks like a maniac ;D The Corythosaurus,on the other hand,is way better,i'd like to buy it Same with the Primeval toys...I love the show,so as soon as i'll find 'em somewhere,be sure that i'll get them!

They did a pretty good job with the Corythosaurus head, but the arm/leg proportions look a bit off to me. Somehow it doesn't seem enough like a hadrosaur.
It just doesn't do it for me the way the old Invicta Lambeosaurus did.

Wow the Diplodocus actually looks pretty cool! How'd they go with the feet? Still too many fingers/claws? The actual fossil in question only preserves spines aling the hips and tail. They may have existed all over the back as WWD speculated, but this one matches what is known more conservatively. Might actually be the first reconstruction of any kind I've ever seen that tried to do that, good on them! And the little anurognathids from the Primeval line remind me of the little rubber Rhamphorhynchus that came with the DinoRiders Brontosaurus. Edit: www.dinosaurcollector.150m.com/Toyway.htmNope, still screwed up the feet. Battat still holds the record for the only toy company to have ever gotten sauropod feet right in history.

Yah, post pictures of the Salvat figures you won DinoObcessed. There were so many figures up at that time of the auction that I don't remember how all of them look liked. I think the some were WWD figure copies, too. Really wish I won that big Krono!

Thanks for all the diplo anatomy info Thagomizer, for a sauropod fan I am not much informed! Fascinating about those spikes. As I have said, the figure is a must have for all sauropod fans to add to their collection. I just can't get over the head!

;D You are right I forgot. I guess because of its diminutive size relative to most larger sauropods. Please forgive me. ;D

Just want to share some comments I received from some dinosaur toys experts about those Salvat figures I posted on my collector site. Yes, that wouold be Randy Knol of that super informative and cool Dinosaur collector site and Anthony Beeson from Procon! Hmmm we may be on to something with this figures It would be interesting to see what information they can find about those figures. Rsknol says: posted on: 09/18/2008 “Boki, Very interesting I have never seen the Salvat before. Are they still in production? I would love to get some. I run the dinosurCollector site. I am also from Seattle orginally, small world. ” Rsknol says: posted on: 09/19/2008 “yes it is me. I will drop Mike a line I have already sent out some emails to friends in Europe. Great presentation. I am enjoying the pictures. Randy ” Anthony Beeson says: posted on: 09/19/2008 “Hello Boki, Randy has put me in touch with your site today. I had never heard of the Salvat range so that is most interesting to me as well. You will no doubt cause a feeding frenzy amongst dinosaur collectors for these models! Thank you for the nice remarks about the Procon/Collecta range. I have tried to make the series as unusual as possible. Some models turn out better than others but as moulds decay so it gives us a chance to redesign any that we are not ultimately pleased with. There were 6 original dinosaurs before I got involved. The brachiosaurus mould is now wearing out and will be replaced by a more accurate version in a similar pose. This will be a replacement not a new number in the catalogue, so you should buy an example of the first one soon if you want it. Also parasaurolophus will shortly be issued in more sensible colours than the somewhat startling model currently available, so that will become a collector's item. All good wishes. Anthony Beeson ”
