Another option for water is a 2 part resin such as Envirotex available at craft stores. It takes 24 hours to completely cure but can be poured in one cast, any thickness. Does not shrink, big advantage. Needs to have edges of diorama really sealed like you did but it is even more likely to find an escape route. Comes in different sizes, 8 oz cost 11.00USD and covers 2 sq ft(.1858sq m). They also make 32oz, 64oz and one gallon sizes.
