CollectA's entire 2011 new collection series are now officially released and available.
It's been an interesting journey for CollectA. In the span of 5 years, they have gone from embarrassing to serious player in the toy market field. Hard to believe that it's only been that long, almost as old as this forum ;D
CollectA gave us an opportunity to watch a collection line mature before our eyes without having to wait years. For sure, they have not abandoned their pledge to produce obscure and species never before produced for the toy figure market, in addition to those more familiar and tried and true sellers. It's been interesting to hear and read the various discussions and arguments that has occurred here at the forum regarding the line.
This year, CollectA has transformed itself and has emerged as a serious competition to those more established lines like Safari, Papo,Bullyland, and Schleich.
The dramatic transformation is largely due to some changes in the company, notably the departure of some of their earlier sculptors. I have to say that the departures were a good thing for CollectA.
Their quality and accuracy has vastly improved without sacrificing affordability.
Sure, there are still many mistakes in terms of accuracy, but this is quickly becoming the exception rather than the rule. Hopefully, this positive trend towards more accurate and nicely sculpted figures will be the future, and that next years' lineup will be even more impressive.
This year there are 16 plus one that was originally part of 2010. That brings the total to 17 new figures, something no other company has done before. With this rate, they will be surpassing others in the quantity of figures to date.
Released in two phases, this years offering is truly one of the more exciting one for me in a very long time.
So, love them or hate them (or in-between ;D), here they are, CollectA's entire 2011 set of figures ;D
Phase 1 (8 figures)
Deluxe Rhomaleosaurus - Adam already gave this one a good review. Check out the blog for info. Truly a nice and large figure. It was originally part of 2010 lineup, but was delayed.
Attenborosaurus - the second marine reptile this year and the fifth one from them. They seem to release one each year. Wait for Adam's review of it
Amphelosaurus - One of two sauropods this year. This is one of my favorite. It's small, but very nicely detailed. It's hard to believe that such well known and interesting sauropod just now beed made into a toy figure. Oh, check out those sculpted feet, too ;D
Alamosaurus - The second sauropod. Another gem in the collection. The figure has nice movement to it.
Lourinhanosaurus - Not my favorite, but it has it's charm ;D Another first, and at least the arms is not pronated
Irritator - From south America. Nice details on this little guy. Head nicely sculpted. Ya, the arms
Hatzegopteryx - One of two pterosaurs this year, and only the third from them. Not sure why they overlooked this group.
It's a nice big figure. Wonderfully done in a standing pose rather than the typical flying. One of my favorite.
Deluxe Kelenken - Ah, perhaps one of the star in the collection, and the entire range of 2011 figures for me.
It truly is a nicely sculpted and detailed figure. It is also large! Easily the best terror bird toy figure (yes, toy, not desktop model) there is. Surely will catch the eye.
The entire phase 1 set
Phase 2 (9 figures)
Deluxe Plateosaurus - This has become my favorite plateosaurus figure. It's a good size, and has lots to offer. Can't wait to take him out for some photo op.
Liliensternus - Looking better than it's predecessor. It has it's share of problems (you guess it ;D) but still is a nice figure.
Proceratosaurus - Definitely looks better than in any photos I have seen. The head may still be too large, but otherwise I like the details and striking colors.
Ornithocheirus - The second pterosaur this year. The head is nicely done... the body however looks a bit odd. I supposed it was meant to be landing? Anyway, a much bigger figure than I have envisioned. Re=positioning the neck will improve the overall appearance of the figure. I just twisted mine so it's not sideways.
Australovenator - From down under, this is very much like the Afrovenator before it (perhaps taking a page from Papo?) in pose and sculpt. Not the best in the group.
Utharaptor - A small but nicely done figure. It has nice feathers, long tail, and correct hands! ;D
It's a nice new look for this species. The pose is flexible, it can be in a attack or mid-stride.
Attack
Convavenator - A recently described and discovered species making it's first appearance as a toy figure.
Another small but highly detailed figure. I really like this little guy. The bump on the back maybe a bit pointy, but it works for me ;D Ah, check out those clapper hands! ;D
Torosaurus - A revival of this species. It's one of the most strikingly painted ceratopsian figure I have seen. I love it.
Deluxe Dacentrurus - A huge impressive figure! This is one of the best in the series, the entire CollectA series that is.
So much details on this one. The colors are also nicely blended and applied, nothing flashy, just shades of browns. The pose is rearing, yes, it balances perfectly on two legs without the aid of the tail like all of their rearing figures.
It really goes well with the Safari and even Papo figures.
Now, I can't wait till the Mira from Safari arrives, I think they will make a striking pair!
The entire phase 2 set
So, there yo have it, the entire CollectA 2011 release in Boki-photos ;D
As I have said, its the most interesting group of species assembled that I have ever seen.
If I was to have one wish, well, I wish there were prehistoric mammals in the mix. But the lone Terror bird is a good substitute
I hope that you all enjoyed the show. I think that when seen in person, the figures are a lot better.
Next, well, it will be the entire Safari 2011 lineup ;D
Happy Dinosaur toy hunting! ;D
