I thought I start a thread based on Your biggest fear for your collections. Mine is that all my hard collecting gets swept away by a tornado or flood. Or singed in house fire. God if any of that happens I will I fear that, because we live in tornado ally and our town is on the Mississippi river, and living near a river means our town is prone to flooding, make matters worse, there is a creek behind our house that can get some nasty currents on wet days. so that was mine. if you wish, feel free to post yours. Remember, this is fear for your collections, nothing personal (like say Claustrophobia.)

For me its either fire or theft. And also the fact that I have no AC, so I worry about some of my less heat-resistant figures melting in the summer! I have been thinking of purchasing insurance for my collection, because I have so much invested in it now. www.americancollectors.com/Collectible/17/Your thoughts?

I don't think my collection is very valuable to anyone besides me....but I would hate for the OOAK pieces to get damaged in some way. As for floods/tornados/earthquakes etc, I think I must live in the mildest place in Britain, so no worries about that. I imagine a meteorite hitting the Earth would suck quite a lot...I mean, there wouldn't be any more manufacturers around to replace the lost figures. LOL

Fire, most definitely. At least with theft my figures aren't totally lost. And floods or other natural disasters are not likely to happen here.

One thing that could be done is to create a website and let your collection live in cyberspace. There's a guy I met online that had a terrific idea IMHO. He's not into dino models as we are but space and sci-fi. What he had done for his collection is to categorize his collection into say real space, concept, prototypes, fantasy etc.. and then sub categorize each by the year it flew or was conceived. So say you would click Prototype Planes. The from there you would get a page of dates (1930s thru 2000s) and each date was a link- click a date and you would get a page of all the craft of that time period. click an image of the craft and you would then go to additional photos of the craft along with a paragraph about the (real life) plane, and then another about the model. He even created a 1 to 5 scale about how available the kit is. So #1 would be extremely had to find vs. #5 which is readily available everywhere. He did this because he has multiple hundreds of models and no room to display them. So he created this website and he has all his models packed away safely. (Tho I sure he must have a few displayed in his office/den/library etc... Our talk about keeping your collection safe is what made me think of this site. For us we could categorize by Time Period and have our dinos and others displayed that way. Personally I think this is a good idea and would like to start a page like that. Since he's not displaying dinos, I won't post the link of this guys site. But if anyone wants to see it, comment if you think it's appropriate to post it here and I will. My folks at home They gave away more than 2/3 of my collection to charity when I was in the army.... I know that feeling. As I got older my dad gave all my "toys" away to younger cousins or kids of friends of the family saying "You're too old for that junk." I had tubs and tubs of dinos, matchbox cars from when they actually came in the little cardboard boxes and things like that... I actually have nothing from when I was a kid. So admittedly I spend too much $$ on eBay to buy my childhood back.

Natural disaster aside my biggest fear would have to be my cats. So far they haven't done anything except play with a couple smaller figures from the bottom shelf but it would not surprise me if one of them decided to chew on one.

I do not have any fear concerning my collection. Well, wait - maybe I have one. It´s when our baby starts to crawl maybe in December or so and discovers the shelves and cabinets- playing Godzilla for T.rex and company!

My fears: No more space...Having to change homes and moving all of them... Getting some lost or damaged in the process...

Kev: Andre Mursch (Brontodocus) has basically done that. He's categorised photos online of every animal in his collection, but by clade, rather than by time period (so he'll have folders dedicated to Sauropodomorpha, Tyrannosauroidea, etc. - the level of clade depends on how many relevant figures he has).

I fear the megathrust earthquake that has a 1/3 chance of happening in the next 50 years just of the Oregon coast (I live in Portland). That will not be good for my dinoaurs...

There shouldn't be fear. It is the ACTION of collecting that brings us joy. As long as there are figures out there to collect our joy will never end. HAVING a collection is nothing like COLLECTING. I don't fear if anything would happen. If a fire breaks and I can't save them, at least I have the wonderful memories left - and the passion in my soul to keep collecting!

biggest fear: when there's nothing left to buy. Will never happen. Even if mass-produced figurines are over(unlikely since more and more are made every year), custom ones can always be made.

My biggest fear for my collection is damage. Either by fire or earthquake - especially if there is an earthquake, I have a good deal of my collection in a large shelf above my computer desk that surely would take my computer out as well as myself it fell My one paranoia coming to reality is having to move my collection, and maybe even put some of it in storage - I'm moving in with my boyfriend next spring, and I'm not certain I'll have room to display all of my figures... I'm almost positive some will have to be put away. I'm trying to think of some sort of shelving situation that goes around my studio near the ceiling c_c
