I might if I win this time! I am sure there will be some hard competition AND NO GRASS! Even if you say they are the so-called "Cycads" ;D So mammal ones are out then? That's like saying 'no snow' or 'no sand' or 'no water'. I had the impression that the entries were supposed to reflect, as best they could, the landscape of the featured critters. So perhaps "no grass for dinos' would be better. Or jsut ignore the grass thing.

I might if I win this time! There's an idea--the winner should at least start up the next contest!

You guys, I'm not using grass.
I agree with sbell, the winner should start the next round.

I think what CT means is that the maker should strive to make it look realistic

This sounds like it could have been fun untill i read the Entry Guidelines, Shouldn't this be about 'Toy Dinosaur Dioramas'. The correct dinosaurs from correct time frames, correct plants and No T-rex/Triceratops fights just takes the fun out of it. Anyway i still look forward to see what you guys come up with, i would enter but im scared my entry will not be with in the 'Realistic Guidelines'. Goodluck to all.

I think entrants should be allowed to submit grass-filled or inaccurate dioramas. After all, the voters will surely take such factors into account. That is true.... Hopefully people won't like grassy dios. But still, there is the odd chance that a grassy dio will turn out good, and people may "Like" it I don't have to wrry about it getting cold and snowing here in Texas. ;D And if you can't use grass what do you use? Magic Fairy Dust? ;D ;D ;D Most people live where there is only grass present. Thanks dinotoyforum for considering my different periods diorama idea. And no T-Rex versus Triceratops...? Thats classic are you crazy?

Well, it does have to be realistic, and you can have a trex fighting a triceratops, like have the triceratops goring the rex, and having the rex roar in pain, etc. Just nothing too simple( Like a trex biting at a triceratops).

Just what I was worried about I hope that ajax23232 and other who are hesitating will still enter one despite the guidelines. Maybe if you end up having entries that are not 'accurate" in terms of species mix and time period you can open up a separate general category where everything that does not meet the guideline get put in and still be voted on and a winner chosen. That way it will include everyone, after all it should be fun and allow creativity. I understand that guidelines are necessary, but it should also offer some flexibility. Opening up two category will ensure that we have a lot of fun and that it will attract the majority of our forum community to join in. It's your call, It's just a suggestion like I have mentioned in the wallpaper thread. After all, time is very limited for a lot of people including me and it takes so much time doing dioramas, a big factor to consider. And remember, it's all about the fun! It's not a professional entry, it's a contest that we, as dinosaur geeks ;D can all be participating and enjoy ;D

OK, I'm not saying anything but a contest should have rules. There's nothing wrong with parameters. And it's far easier to do a diorama set in the Mesozoic than one might think at first glance. It's just a matter of being careful and selective. I know everybody would like to run outside and take pics like crazy (me included) but IMHO that's not what dioramas should be about

I agree with Tomhet. my only disagreement with the whole thing is the use of photoshopping--I have always thought of dioramas as a 3D scene that can be "held". Even a photo of figures in a stream is 3D; photoshopping means that the scene is no more real than a drawing (even if the objects were).
Or to say it better than myself, fro dictionary.com: 1. A three-dimensional miniature or life-size scene in which figures, stuffed wildlife, or other objects are arranged in a naturalistic setting against a painted background.
That said, the rules were laid out to include 'shopped photos. I just felt like making clear what I thought. I had hoped to get some in, but I don't see it happening unless I can use one that I already have on the web, at Randy Knol's site? It's a Silurian scene!

Sorry, I don't mean that they aren't good--they are. What I meant is that they aren't really 'dioramas' in the proper sense--they are scenes, true, but ephemeral ones--at no point did they exist as something that could be touched when they looked the way the do in the photo.
A diorama is something that, theoretically, you should be able to walk behind and see the back (even if the back is unfinished).
