Chialu, Neoform, Miller, Orsenigo, White Post, WM Otto (La Brea Tar Pits), Smithsonian bronze, Messmore and Damon, Abbeon, Twistums
All of those companies have figures rarer than the Battat Diplodocus. And the highest battat diplo only went for $600 if I'm not mistaken

$600 is still nuts, mind you.

In a related topic, not meant to de-rail this one of course....but what was the first dinosaur toy ever made ?
Not resin or a statue..but the very first toy ever made to be a toy for children...I've never heard this question answered before that I'm aware of.

The first Dinosaur toy was the articulated "twistum" which was made in 1920. The 1935 Son Of Fire radios show had premiums made for Libbys Milk by Lincoln Logs. This was the first Dinosaur Set made for a 3 times a week 15 minute radio show. A Lost World pre TV.

I'm surprised the first dino toy wasn't some little crystal palace figure made and sold or given away when it opened...heh heh

Er, the most expensive as far as I know was that custom TLW triceratops that some Mexican guy did. It was sold for $999.
And, it was a bloody custom.

Maybe it is the special pressed cocaine version? ;D Best let the border dogs have a go at it... ;D Mods, feel free to delete if this is considered a bit to riske a comment (it is only meant in jest and should not be taken otherwise -but others may not find it funny).

This particular piece was unproduced from the JP:TLW line ..this fellow sculpted it from the image on the back of the packaging. It has movement and dino-damage wound just like the actual piece would have had. So it's not a custom but a sculptured toy of an unproduced piece...with no others in existence..it's as rare as he wishes to make it.
The same guy is also making the Ultimasaurus and Chaos Effect Ankylosaur...for a JP toy collector these are grails.

But it's a replica, anyway. It's paid like it was the true real piece wich is not. I might understand that somebody pay so much money for a one-of-a-kind prototype wich was found on the catacombs of Kenner archive... So, allright, you are paying for the real thing... But in this case, I think it's insanely overpriced... Don't get me wrong, I do feel it's a really beautiful piece and the sculptor is a true artist. But $999 is a lot of coins for something wich isn't unique or unproduced (there are several of them and they are still being produced, and you can be bloody sure the sculptor is making like 20 or 30 more after this last auction)... It's a replica of a unique and unproduced figure, but it's not that figure. --Anyway I suppose a guy who spends $999 in this doesn't really care that much about trifles as this. I wonder if the sculptor ever dreamed about getting this rich just making dinosaur-toys.

I wonder if the sculptor ever dreamed about getting this rich just making dinosaur-toys. That's kind of what I was thinking--it isn't actually the figure it is meant to be, just a recreation. So let this be a lesson--to anyone with modelling skill, put your talents to recreating whatever it is that JP toy fans want--apparently they will spend beyond common sense to have it (wasn't there some kind of T.rex that they always go on about? Make one of those).

I wonder too if there are not some extremely fine lines of intellectual property rights being accidentally trodden upon here. The sculpture is made afresh and is not a direct cast from the original, so in that sense, it is this artist's own work. He's also not reproducing the figures and profiting from them on a commercial scale. So technically, no copyright law has at all been broken. But it was nevertheless copied from the original sculptor's design, and some considerable financial gain was had as a result, and in that sense, intellectual property has been somewhat... impinged, shall we say.
I should make clear that I'm not at all attacking or accusing this artist, of course; just pondering on a few things. I'm certain he never set out with any determined plan but was just being a good customiser/sculptor - then just happened to have earned something very handsome for it.

That's true, but it could also be said for a lot of the Chinasaurs out there that look amazingly like other branded dinos :-)
If he keeps making those triceratops, eventually the deman will drop - as wil lth price. I agree with Fox and Sbell, it's still a replica.

Now that you mention it--he does label them with a JP symbol--so in fact, he is profiting through the direct use of a reserved trademark. In other words, whoever owns the JP name can probably make his life very unpleasant.

I agree 900 bucks (it was 909 actually, not 999) is overpriced for a custom, even one done as well as this one. Then again, the real deal would be worth around 3000 bucks...
Dino Riders Pachyrhinos and Chasmos aren't that rare if you know where to find them (though I keep missing out on the both of them). My vote for rarest toy would be WWD Ornithocheirus. Two in existence? Uncommon at the least I call that...
