Actually, I think it's just me who hates him and who has been harshly critiquing him. Maybe I would have felt more forgiving if it were not for my recent string of disappointments with Papo. Since 2010 their only really amazing releases have been the pachyrhino and the styrac, and perhaps their decent attempt at an ankliosaurid last year. But then we have to put up with a featherless egg-stealing oviraptor, nessie, an awful velociraptor repaint, a half-arsed smilodon, and this thing they are calling a "tylosaurus". Now they top it all off with a JP rex/V-rex chimera. I'm just not seeing the leaps and bounds in quality and accuracy that I was hoping for when they released the pachyrhino. I was really hoping for something a little more... awe-inspiring... than this, by now. And I was certainly hoping for more than 1 theropod since 2009. Don't get me wrong, the new rex is a great "movie-monster" figure, but it's just not what I was hoping for given Papo's potential. I can honestly say I will never buy this figure. It's just too much movie-monster. For me, Papo is often hit or ignore, and most of the time I ignore them (despite having a nearby store where I can get all of them). If Papo were to release a reposed Spinosaurus, you would be all over it

..... I like the new Paporex ---- sorry, purists. My childish motivated hands will probably ignore the orders of my brain's paleontologically educated part while pressing the 'buy' button ;D. I love the 2012 Paporex. I'm not sure where the hate is originating from----I'm detecting some ideological undercurrents Maybe we're really discussing something far more ingrained/wired and along the lines of a "weak" Paleontology v.s "strong" Paleontology "schema", where "orthodox" proponents of "traditional" reconstructions see themselves as the torch-bearers of a long line of saviors that are defending themselves (and their corresponding traditions) from extrinsic corruption (e.g film depiction of dinosaurs). It's similar to the conservative v.s liberal battles, the "strong" atheist v.s "weak" atheist v.s agnostic battles, and the puritanical religionists v.s mystics v.s fideists cosmological wars.... Well, I digress.....I find it extremely difficult to believe that there are individuals out there that watched a Jurassic Park movie (for the very first time) without any sense of awe or magic. However, it is possible, I suppose....we're all wired differently, outliers and all...

I like this Papo rex and will likely get it but if they put their efforts into making accurate dinosaurs they would go unchallenged in the toy department and I think that is what is frustrating about Papo. Movie monsters are great but this rex and the tylo are not even movie monsters, they're just inaccurate toys. This rex does not look like the JP animal and I would actually prefer it if they made it look more like the rex in King Kong. Hell, they could make it look like the rex in the original Kong and I would like it more, at least then there would be something I could relate it to. The T-rex looks more or less exactly the same as the original Papo T-rex. I think we are magnifying (and to some extent, imagining) the discrepancies that exist between the two models. The picture showing the side view of the Papo T-rex is reminiscent of the following JP reconstruction: www.gavinrymill.com/dinosaurs/jurassicpark/RexHeadDownMan.jpg

Maybe some of us just think it's a bit ugly, and they got the anatomical proportions wrong. (But will probably buy it anyway.)

I think the main problem I have is with the crocodile-teeth, when it comes to the head anyway.
And Tyrannosaurus wasn't ugly...it was beautiful! And it had tiny, tiny arms, too.

(I should make this clear: I'm not being entirely serious, much as there are some similarities there. It's clearly more JP/King Kong remake inspired than anything.)

Must we have this conversation EVERYTIME a new Papo figure is revealed?! "Now what John Hammond and Ingen did at Jurassic Park was create genetically engineered theme park monsters. Nothing more, and nothing less." ~ Dr. Alan Grant (Jurassic Park 3) Papo figures are NOT supposed to be accurate so don't judge them by saying that they aren't accurate! If you don't like it, don't buy it, but don't judge others for liking something that you don't. I didn't see anyone judging anyone else. We have been critiquing the new figures, which I think is perfectly normal. If any of my comments came off as judging others personally for liking the new rex, I apologize But whether I intend to buy the new rex or not, I don't see anything wrong with pointing out what I don't like about the figure. Also, correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think Papo has ever said one way or the other whether their dinosaur figures are meant to be accurate or not. Their figures have really hit-or-miss accuracy since most of them are based on very popular stereotypes, but I would assume that their goal is not to be deliberately INaccurate. I don't think their dinosaurs are meant to be either accurate or inaccurate, so its up to the buyer to decide how "good" a figure is based on their own preferences. However, it would be nice if they had stuck more to the stereotypes for their new rex, if they wanted that to be their main source of reference (because I agree with gwangi, I don't think this rex is a good representation of the JP rexes either). Here is a customized papo ver1 rex in a running pose, which I think looks much better. bucketfoot-al.tripod.com/DinoModels/Papo_Rex.jpg

The lower jaw especially feels like the V-Rex from Kong..not that's bad, just the way it was. I liked the Allo from Dino Revolution even with his oddly broken and regrew jaw ..made him unique..so no real problem there. I do wonder how easy it would be to replace the jaw on this new one with the 1st wholly JP one. If it's the same scale I bet it's do-able.

Thanks guys! You're welcome. The new one's lower jaw is a little bit bulkier than the original. Here it is from the side with its mouth closed: And here it is next to the original. They are both about the same size and more or less share the same proportions: I'm torn on which I like more, personally. I think they look good together. Well i am surprised. I'm loving the new papo T-Rex However, I wish that it kept the same coler scheme as the first one. Oh well Looks like Mama is sitten over the eggs while daddy goes and hunt for some food The irony is the male was green in the film and mom was brown.. lol I think it's fair to say that, while Papo's dinosaurs aren't all the most scientifically accurate, they are still more accurate than a lot of dinosaur toys kids will play with. You can still find the good old tail-dragging dinosaurs at every dollar store around the world. I love it my other papo rex needs some company. But very unpapo to release it first outside France. Hope it will get soon abroad. I was wondering about that..it was said this was the only one on the shelf...maybe it was a demo piece that wasn't supposed to be for sale yet ?

The papo rex is nice in its own way, reminds me as a mix of the JP rex and this- I cant wait to buy one, I wonder what else Papo may have in store.

Just thought I point that out for the heck of it.

I certainly understand the "if you don't like it, don't buy it" mentality, but there is a little more to it. Looking at it from a selfish perspective (I'm very good at that) if I can convince others not to buy a Papo (or any other company) animal that I don't like, low sales may cause that company to reconsider and re-do its Trex so it's arms don't reach down to it's knees. Two points: 1. This figure is not a dinosaur, its an ABOMINATION. 2. Point 1 above is irrelevant. Just judging by the buzz on this thread alone, this will be Papo's BIGGEST SELLER hands down. Its like a GRUESOME CAR CRASH - you don't want to, but you just can't help but to stare... While it makes my stomach churn every time I see it (for reasons listed earlier), there is ... something ... sickeningly ATTRACTIVE about it, in an evil way. (Possessed TRex? Were-Rex? ). Whatever "bad juju" they mixed into this sculpt, it will help to break all their sales records. Which is fine, more power to Papo, lots of kiddies will have lots of fun ... we sillier *ER* SERIOUS collectors have lots of other choices out there to satisfy us ....

I agree with Simon regarding the new Papo T-rex and the fact that it will, indeed, break all previous sales records. There certainly is a bit of "bad juju", voodoo magic and/or gnarliness in this sculpt....It's undeniable.....The truth is .... everyone is going to end up buying the new Papo T-rex sculpt (....with haters hiding their personal Papo T-rex v.2 in their closets or bins), especially when more pictures begin to surface on the net.....Some people will insist on buying the Papo T-rex for their younger brothers and sisters (the same way "mature" grown-up folks get a Wii or Kinect for their siblings), but secretly holding on to the figure....others will buy it simply so that they may proceed to pretend-bash it on their blogs.....

As an aside, I've often wondered where these hugely too-long arms on tyrannosaur figures are coming from. Not just Papo, but others too. It seems like they are a lot smaller than sculptors often realise (the odd thing being, of course, that Tyrannosaurus is known for its tiny arms).

Yeah, you're right.....the teeth do seem to appear more crocodilian (and perhaps, more fitting for a new Papo Spinosaurus sculpt)....the teeth kinda resemble those found in the WS Kaprosuchus....
