Safari or Papo: Maned wolf Bongo Sumatran rhinoceros Pygmy hippo Lowland tapir Dugong Commerson's dolphin (or related) Hourglass dolphin (or related) Amazon River dolphin Northern/Southern Rightwhale dolphin Risso's dolphin Dall's porpoise Finless porpoise Spectacled porpoise Bowhead whale Pygmy Sperm whale Blainville's Beaked whale Pilot whale So here's a question I have, regarding these never ending lists--among modern animals, pygmy hippos seem to frequently come up. Is there a reason for this? While as an animal they are interesting, are they truly so spectacular that 1) they absolutely must be made, 2) they must be made before many other mammls and 3) they are so easily identifiable to a general buying public that it is really hard to believe there is only one figure made (a UK Yowie). I ask because we are expected to believe that this: is so easily differentiated from this: that any company would best off making both instead of, say, easily distinguished carnivorans, primates, antelope, whales, etc? And of course the response is to make them to scale. Which to the vast majority of buyers would be called a hippo and a calf (even with a tag). I know that these are 'fantasy' threads, in that they are basically brainstorms that no one who is going to read them is someone that would make decisions about them, but I am at a loss as to why the pygmy hippo seems to frequently be on people's lists (unlike the nearly-as-ubiquitous bongo, which I can understand as a favourite and as a marketable possibility).

They don't look too different in the pictures you posted, but the pygmies do have a different skull shape. Especially if you consider that toy companies generally go with the very large, powerful, and very typically hippo-like heads, usually modeled after bull hippos instead females. And these look quite different from any pygmy hippo. I haven't seen any hippo toys that look like this: I suppose my interest in them comes from the fact that growing up watching nature and national geographic, I never heard any mention of pygmy hippos. I think I was in high school, or maybe even early college, before I heard about them. They never seem to get any love or attention compared to their bigger cousins. I remember how amazed I was to learn that there was actually such a thing as a miniature hippo, and I couldn't understand why no one ever talked about them, and why every zoo in the country didn't have one. There are two other animals I want to see toys of, but I can't remember the names! One is a kind of wild cow, from asia I think?? Very muscular, black, with white stockings on its legs. The second animal reminds me of a musk-ox, and is a good rock climber. The golden something... Anyone know the names of these two?

Has any company ever made a cool Praying Mantis?! Safari's mantid released as part of the Smithsonian Collection is nice, albeit big. The smaller poseable one for their Hidden Kingdom collection is OK, too. CollectA has a nice one; ReMent also has one (the latter being more along the Japanese Gashapon lines). FameMaster 4D has a nice one you assemble. K&M's (Wild Republic) is kinda neat too.

I hear you, Sean. I don't understand these 'fantasy wish lists' either...they just set one up for disappointment.
I've developed the Four Steps of New Animal Releases:
1) People develop their 'predictions' (read: wish lists).
2) Companies release their New Years releases. The complaining begins as peoples' wishes were not fulfilled.
3) Pictures of the New Releases are unveiled. People compainabout colors, poses, scientific accuracy.
4) The products are released and the people who did all the complaining in 2) and 3) above promptly run out and buy the product they complained about.
;D

1) I wasn't considering this a predictions thread, so much as a "I wish they made this" thread. I won't be disappointed if no one makes the animals on my list because I don't really expect them too.
2) I complain because about half of new releases suck.
3) See #2
4) I generally don't buy any figure that I don't like.
I cant speak for everyone else though.

But really, I just don't get the pygmy hippo love. Even with the above explanation. It's just a small hippo, which even as a well-sculpted toy with a properly-shaped head, will still look like a baby to most people. As for the other, mystery animals--I think the 'cow' might be a Gaur. No idea on the other (although I think I can piocture the one you mean).

I cant help but wonder, has there been a triop figure on the market yet? or goblen shark? If not then i am adding them to my wishes There are two Triops figures--one from Epoch, one from Kaiyodo. As for Goblin sharks, I think there are at least 5 (Takara * 2, Kaiyodo Aquatales, PV small sharks, Colorata DX sharks, a tiny one from K&M in a rubber ball, probably a Neko Works one...probably others). Plus, two Scapanorhynchus one--the I Dig sharks set, and the amazing Wild Safari Prehistoric Sharks toob one that every good collector should own by now if they ever hope to see more diversity in their toobs and lines of prehistoric animals (crocs toob as well). And I was involved in the development of that one!

Interestingly, there are new wolverines and lynx coming out--from Mojo. And based on the photos, I would highly recommend their lynx (it's an Iberian).
I have to say--Mojo dinos suck. But when it comes to pretty much anything else, they make some pretty brilliant animals.
