Malcolm is telling me that, despite how it appears in his top and bottom photos (The others are too poorly angled to use to judge.), the height of the figure at the shoulder is actually greater than the length from shoulder to tail. If this is the case, then it meshes with the math I just did without looking so. If true, and I assume it is if he says so, then I'm right about what the dimensions should be, wrong about not seeing from his pics that they are what I've been saying is right. Waiting to hear from him. BTW, he can see the board but can't post for some reason. Mods?? ;D I told you you couldn't tell from the pictures because of the angle! What do you mean, what you are saying is right. You said he needed to lengthen the legs. And just like many people tried to tell you its alright the way it is. Just think all this over nothing. ;D

Gonna call it a night so will present this so in case I wind up being wrong it will not spill over into another day--at least if I don't define day by the calender... My bad on that point. Malcolm said the figure was 8" long and I was using cm to calculate. It doesn't change the simple math though. But my misjudging the length of his figure's neck does a bit so let's scrap that anyway so I don't have to redo and retype it for a slight difference. Although, the fossil's neck is proportionately longer to its head than Malcolm's is to his according to him but I won't even... But, right or wrong, here's what I mean, illustrated... The two lines are virtually the same length. I've all along maintained that the animals should be taller at the shoulder than the length of the torso. At the very least it should be as tall as long by the math above. Malcolm just told me he'd been using the same shoulder point (the top white square) to start both measurements, but that doesn't give a true torso length as we're losing the unmeasured space between the highest point of the shoulder and the base of the neck. And I doubt he measured the neck down to the middle of the thigh which is the point under the square on the shoulder. The deficit is pretty much represented by the space to the left of the vertical line, about 1 cm. That shows that the height is not only not greater than the torso length, it's less here. If we allow for the tilt of the piece in the photo, even giving it a full cm of height which I doubt it warrants, it still only brings the two dimensions to being equal. But I doubt the perspective would gain us a cm. So, Sean was about right, I'd say, when he said the leg length could increase up to 1 cm, as that would make the shoulder height at the absolute least (if there was no loss of height from the perspective) even with the length. I sent the pic to Malcolm but I assume too late. Forgot to note, the image is 9" long instead of eight so even though the principle is the same, that 1 cm deficit needs to be adjusted ever so slightly. Would the adjustment need to be large? No. Certainly no more than a cm. Can he do or get away with doing a version wherein the height is not greater than the torso length. Yes. Not equal. I'd say no. But at least think I figured out where the discrepency was...that starting measuring point for the torso length being off. That explains why Malcolm worked the measurements the way he did and why they work when he does the math but not when I did. So it's a very small amount, yes, and obviously I see very small amounts more than most here (meaning they are more problematic for me). Still not 100% sure I'm right. Still think I am. Not sure what he'll think when that extra 1 cm comes into play. But, signing off.

I think perhaps we should give this a rest for a while? For whatever reason, this seems to have people really invested. And I think it needs some chilling time.
As for why Malcolm can't post--he may need to sign back in (this is a public thread).

My, my! Are we still at this? I think that Sean is right. Y'all need to take a chill-pill, and give it a little rest, lol, at least until we hear from Malcolm! He might have already altered things by now. We don't know yet. So, all this back-n-forth is really going nowhere for now, right?! Although to me, the legs do look too short and the hump too small. But, I'm only basing that on available pics I've been able to find. And so far, I haven't been able to find a pic of the skeleton from a dead-on profile. It might be the different angles that's throwing me off. Anyway, like I said above, the discussion seems to have reached a stalemate. I think it best to wait and hear from Malcolm. Just a thought.

Hello-
I am not able to login when on my computer at home although it did say I was online here when I did try to login- oh well, I'm at work and was able to login here from that computer-
I emailed Brett to try to explain to him that the model is 8 inches in length which at 1:40 scale is 8 meters which is right where it should be acoording to all of the reference info I had found on Indricotherium prior to starting the sculpt- It is 5.5 inches or 5.5 meters tall at the shoulder- the length of the body measured from where the neck meets the body at the chest is 4.5 inches or 4.5 meters- the head measures just under 1.5 inches which is about right-
I took a side view of a skeleton that I had gotten a while back to use- I trace the skeleton and use this to make my armature- the reason I think that the legs appear short to some is that I bulked them up quite a bit more then is usually depicted, feeling the most images I see of this animal to me seem to have real skinny legas for such a big animal, especially considering it is a rhino- I also beefed up the whole boduy too - I hate skinny looking reconstructions myself- I rechecked the legs against my original traced profile and actually the legs are a bit too long according to that-lol- pictures can be deceiving- the skeleton that CM posted is shot from below looking up att he skeleton so it distorts the view, photos might be shot with a wide angle lens- you never know unless you were the source of the photo- I think that I am within the parameters of the measurements of my reference material- I used like four different sources to get the measurements- I never just use one source or one image to use as reference- I am also at an advantage having the actual model here to measure and not a photo I took- I know it is sometimes confusing to judge my sculpts from the photos I post- not the best photographer- hope this clears up this discussion-

No more debate from me then.
But...
Malcolm...
When you get a chance, can you take and post a photo of the piece that is perfectly level? Just hold the camera level and lower yourself until just at the point at which you can't see the top surface of the base. That should give you a fairly level shot.
It's not to discuss it with anyone else. I just want to have an understanding of the figure, judge if I'd like to buy it, etc.
Thanks. Brett

I am afraid I won't be posting anything until I figure out why I can't login on my home computer- I am not able to post photos from my work computer- if I can't figure out why my computer at home isn't allowing the login, then this project will be just me sculpting away without any posting of photos or any input from members- not much of a computer guy so we shall see what happens- I don't understand why I wasn't able to login last night or this morning although it showed me as being online after I tried the login-

Truely an awsome beast, love those comparison shots with other animals.
I have a request: Can there be a thread set up where he JUST pictures the models, no comments from the peanut gallery please, thats what this tread is for! Its tough filtering through 60+ pages to find the latest sculpts.

The thread, nobs, actually is made for comments by the peanut gallery. That is what this project is basically about---- Our opinions on his models after he posts pics of them, before he goes off and makes casts of them.

Yes you are correct, and I would not want to take this away from anybody. What I was hoping for is a SEPERATE thread with only PICS of the sculpts as they become avaible. IE not having to manually search through pages of discussions just to see the new sculpts.

I usually have to go the whole 9 yards when it happens to me...remove all those temp internet files, cookies, and history..then make sure the cookies setting are up to " allow all " or something...and then turn off the comp, then turn back on, ge the internet going and then, finally, be able to sign in. I have one forum I go to where it signs me in then takes to one of those FOrbidden error pages...but if I just go back to the index page I'm logged in..weird. If you look in the classified section, Malcolm is posting pics of his completed pieces there once they are ready for sale, so once these new sculpts are done , they will show up there so they can easily browsed through...

No worries, Malcolm. I'll wait for a pic of the finished piece.
I wouldn't stress about the computer glitch. It's probably easily remedied. Either way you'll get it fixed out of necessity, since you need the pics of the finished pieces posted to get them sold. Maybe we can all pitch in for a Geek Squad visit if it comes to that.
In the meantime, if you like, when needed you could send photos to me and I'll post them for you.
