The official WWD toy figures were produced and released by Toyway.
However, there is another line of dinosaur toys that is commonly referred to as the "unofficial WWD" figures. These WWD movie inspired set was released by TS Toys, a China based company. TS Toys joins AAA, Chick Yuet, and Waiphoon, as one of the best producer of "Chinasaurus" prehistoric figures. And there are some really fantastic figures produced by these companies, including some really obscure ones.
Here, we take a look at TS Toys WWD inspired dinosaur figures.
What is interesting about this line is that it looks like they just got a copy of WWD book and recreated the dinosaurs in them. Some of the poses and colorations are even the same! Half of the species produced overlap those from the official line, and the other half unique to the line. There are twelve figures in this collection, released in two series.
Picking up where Toyway left off, here are some of the figures that were not seen in the original line: Coelophysis, ornithocheirus, Eustreptospondylus (try saying that fast!), Muttaburasaurus, Ornitholestes, and Diplodocus (one of the first Diplo figure showing dorsal spikes).
Those that overlap the official line include Torosaurus, Liopleurodon, Stegosarus, Anklylosaurus, Allosaurus, and Polacanthus. It’s interesting to see these overlapping figures side-by-side.
These figures are hollow and the size range from 8" to 15 ( diplo).
Unfortunately, most of the names stamped on their bellies are wrong! But, the figures are well made and all the bipedal figures can stand perfectly balanced on their two feet. The Ceolophysis, muttaburasaurus, Ornithocheirus, Liopleurodon, and Diplodocus are the best, IMHO. The others, they are fine, just not as outstanding as the ones I mentioned.
However, the Eustreptopondylus might be the first figure of it ever made (Procon also released one last year).
As for accuracy, well, like all the major lines, the figures vary in their accuracy. To be honest, accuracy is not something I really look for in a line, just my own personal style. I collect each figure/line for what they represent: a different interpretation of the beast ) I’m just fascinated by the diversity of the figures and their differences from one another. My taste is more forgiving in that regards.
To date, the only place I can find the figure for sale is at the Dinosaur Farm. I believe the price for the entire set is $52, not really bad. I have not seen them offered anywhere else. However, you can often find some up for auction on eBay on a regular basis and they average around $10 each.
So, if after viewing the photos you find yourself interested (or not) in acquiring some for your own collection, I highly recommend getting them now while they are still available. They have been around for a few years now, and just like many others before them, they just might be retired very soon.
The Completed Collection ;D
A pair of Liopleurodon, one of my favorite from the collection ;D
The lovely ceolophysis. It's really a nice, big figure.
A pair of Muttaburasaurus Another favorite of mine
Making up for Toyways shortcomings, a pair of Diplodocus! ;D One of the first to show those dorsal spikes ;D
A noisy pair of Ornithoceirus ;D Great figure.
It's Torosaurus not Triceratopops! ;D
The classic Stego
Big Al himself! I resisted the temptation of putting a small turtle ;D
Ankylo
Polacanthus ;D
Misbehaving pair of Ornitholestes ;D
And Eustreptopondylus ( say it really fast! ;D) Yah, the one that got eaten by Liopleurodon in one of the scene ;D
There you have it, Dino Fans! Another completed collection ;D I hope you all enjoyed the show. Tune it next time for another look at my menagerie ;D
Bonus Feature:
Well, not officially part of the line, but it looks like it could have been. It's odd that both Toyway and TS Toys neglected this little guy.
Considering how much exposure he had in the movie ( co-staring with postosuchus), Placerias is definitely absent from both collection. Who knows, he may have been part of the original lineup ;D He may have been discarded and picked up by who ever released him ( I'm not sure who really released him). Either way, he is not out of place with this collection at all, so here he is joining the cast ;D
