Ok, at the risk of being "educated" by the experts ;D, I am posting my so called Devonian faunas ;D Ok, I'm no expert, but I did try to do my research.
I did not want to just do a "here they are post" so I wrote up a few words about the animals ;D
It's not a big collection right? ;D My interest in the Devonian did not really take off, but I realize it would be fun to do a period by period photo op of the figures I have in my collection.
Let's face it, who else would do such a thing? ;D ;D ;D ;D
So, do correct me if I got them wrong, ok?
Here we go, the first installment of Before the Dinosaur series, the Devonian Period! ;D
The dinosaurs overshadowed their smaller, less known predecessors.
Even the companies who produce prehistoric toy figures neglected many of these odd and wonderful groups of pre-dinosaur animals.
The Devonian is also known as the age of fish. The group diversified and became the dominant group of animals.
Amphibians and other marine animals also appeared at this time, but did not yet reached the diversity that would come much later during the Permian. The amphibians that evolved still have many fish-like characteristics.
The late Devonian experienced a mass extinction. Hard hit were the marine organisms that dominated the seas. The mass extinction ended the age of fish and paved the way for other organism to evolve and diversify.
My collection ;D
THE PLACODERMS ;D
Perhaps the best represented Devonian fish in the toy figure market is Dunkleosteus (a large placoderm).
Safari, Kaiyodo, TEDCO, SRG, all released a Dunkleosteus figure.
The Safari figure is the biggest and the best dunkleosteus figure ever produced.
The others are small, but overall nice figures. The SRG metal figure is perhaps the rarest of them all.
Bothriolepsis, Pteraspis, and Hemicyclespis, are the other Devonian fish in my collections. They are not as well represented and are all small and mostly released by Kaiyodo. There is that big figure model I got from Malcolm that I repainted.
They are highly unusual and very beautiful figures. Let’s hope that, perhaps, companies will give these Devonian critters a second look and release more in the future.
THE LOBE-FINNED FISH
The Lobe-finned fish also evolved.
Eusthenopteron is a big Devonian fish. To date, there is no large figure produced. All of the known toy figures are small. Kaiyodo released one that comes in two different color versions. Starlux also released one. Both are hard to find and can be expensive.
Various species of Coelacanth were also present (we are substituting a contemporary coelacanth figure, ok? ;D)
THE SHARKS
Sharks also diversified during the Devonian.
Cladoselache and the weird Stethacanthus sharks are two species that has toy figure representation. Ok, so suspend reality for a minute and imagine the sharks I included to be primitive, ok? ;D ;D ;D Who knows, most probably look like some modern ones ;D Not many Devonian shark figures around, right?
Trilobites and ammonites were also present during the Devonian.
There are a few trilobite figures, some big and the others mostly small. I used an old mixed photo, so pardon the mix of species from different periods
THE AMPHIBIANS ;D
Amphibians made their first appearance during this period. They are still very much fish-like in appearance.
Acanthostega and Ichtyostega are two early amphibians that have toy figure representation.
Kaiyodo, Yujin, and TEDCO figures, all small but very well done figures.
;D ;D ;D ;D Fun right? ;D ;D ;D Feel free to post and add your own collection pictures. I would love to see a more complete picture of the whole line of available Devonian fauna figures ;D Hope you enjoyed the show, next we will take a look at the Carboniferouse/Permian (mostly) faunas in my humble collection ;D ;D
