Ok, so, I never ever liked the carnegie acro's head. It always reminded me of a dimetrodon's. Then after looking at acro skulls I realized just how bad it was. I also relized the tail was a tiny bit too short. So, I fixed both problems..... ;D I made the new head out of clay, and baked it and superglued it on. Now I just need to paint it and glue it to a nice flat piece of limestone... Anybody have color scheme ideas for this guy? EDIT: Arg! Cursed lighting made the teeth on the left side of the head look malformed and made the eyes look odd! I'll take more pics out tomorrow in the sunlight!

Now the dumb question - wouldn't it have been easier to just buy Dinonikes' new Acro?

In a way, yes-- But then I'd still have the carnegie acro still sitting around with his ugly little head... I do plan on getting that acro though!

Great job so far, maybe the teeth could use some work? And wouldn't it be easier to use putty? Frankly I'd fix the legs too

This was always the Carnegie piece that bothered me the most. Why it has that Dimetrodon head I'll never know - we've known what the skull looks like for a long time, haven't we? Anyway, looks like you're off to a fine start!

Frankly I'd fix the legs too The teeth look kind of smooshed due to the flourescent lighting is all I'm terrified to use putty, and clay is familiar to me, so I used it. What's wrong with the legs? Minus the tin ankles.

I think putty is not so hard to work with Not to mention that baking is not recquired I just hate the muscles (or lack of) of the legs

Looks really good. Could you put more pics up from different angles?

This looks a lot more like the real animal. I wouldn't say it had a 'Dimetrodon' head before but it was definitely in tyrannosaur or even abelisaur territory, which is very, very wrong for a large allosauroid. Good work then.

Good job, Cordy... As soon as i'll have some spare time, i'll work on my Carnegie Acro too! Maybe not something as extreme as what you did, i was thinking to add some features on the infamous, incorrect head, to make him look more allosaurid-ish ;D

Well, the head had a "dome" on it's snout kind of like dimetrodon did... If you cut off the carnegie acro's head and put it on the carnegie dimetrodon's body, I don't think you'd be able to tell anything was done right away... ;D
Sid, with the original acro head, I just carved down the dome-y part of the head so it looked more allosaur-ish. But I was looking at some acro skeletons the other day and I realized it was still very wrong, so I "carved him up like a christmas ham" and just replaced the head altogether ;D And it's not like I mutilated a rare and expensive figure, so I don't have a guilty conscience either ;D

This looks fantastic overall. If I'm going to nitpick then one side of the head does look better than the other - the eye in the top two pictures (what you might call the left hand side) looks better. It really reminds me of that superb painting of Acrocanthosaurus with Sauroposeidon in the background (can't remember the artist's name). The other eye doesn't look quite as good. This is a very minor quibble though. Overall, the figure and the paint scheme look great and this is a huge improvement - and God knows it's not something I think I'd have the skills to do. Edit - I meant this painting by Julius Csotonyi: csotonyi.com/Acrocanthosaurus_atokensis.html

I agree about the eye I was down to painting it with a toothpick trying to get it right!

That is great work! It looks pretty seamless, probably thanks to the eye-catching paint job.

I tried blue and it went away a little bit, I guess it distracts from everything else a bit ;D Thanks griff
