Yeah, that one is much nicer - for one thing its mouth is closed (mine has its mouth open) - but then there is that !#@%$&! 'tripod' stance again.... Actually the stance is nicely upright - it just needs a base or some support, like most decent theropod sculpts that aren't tripod or have way oversize feet, yeah I'm talking to you Schleich Allosaurus! This version has remarkable detail - the front claws are extremely sharp. This will probably be my Thanksgiving painting project.

I also was inspired by King Kong and had one of the original Marx sets when I was about 5 years old. Most of the Marx are long gone but I still pick up an occasional one in yard sales. Now, I have half my garage set up in a gigantic diorama which spans from the Permian(and a few b4 that) to the prehistoric mammals. I'm always looking out for new species (looking forward to the Procon Tsintasaurus). Often i will "upgrade" a species if I discover a better version. My step-daughter looked at my collection and said it was obvious that dinosaurs died out from over-population. I've decided on several occasions that I have enough, but then something new comes out and I can't resist it.

He already has some in the diorama board.
As for collecting, I go for everything that isn't a mammal, is well done, is a species I don't already have, and is accurate. I don't buy stuff just to have huge quantities of dinosaurs laying around.

What chinasaurs? I haven't bought any chinasaurs in years! Any chinasaur you may see I own for the fact I like it's retro feel or they are toys from when I was younger.

You shudda just said "I buy what I like". Now people are gonna be looking for exceptions to your statement that make you contradict yourself just for the sake of being funny.
As for me...I buy what I like.

Everybody buys what they like. I wanted to be a little more specific

not everyone. Some people buy everything of a certain set for the sake of completeness. I have a friend who was like that with certain action figure lines.

Yeah, completist people.
I'm gonna play the bad-psychoanalitic-wannabe-guy a littlebit, but please consider I'm not an expert at all and my picture is extremely rough:
Completists are more idealistic than materialistic collectors, as the goal is not the object but the goal of owning it. But they also like "having everything". Maybe they don't like the figures themselves but they sure like the fact of having all.
Being a completist and not having a great economy can be fatal I guess. Therefore, to be one, you time and a lot of money. That's why a complete collection of a completist is in some way something that defines the social value of that person. It's like having expensive paintings on your living-room that you don't even like or understand, but bought them for the solely purpose of let them speak for themselves: "my owner is an important person". It's a matter of social power. Since one can't expose his money, valuable objects are bought with it to symbolize the money I have.
I'm not trying to judge it, I don't believe there's nothing wrong with being that way.
Also, surely some completists collector can tell me he doen't look for having everything to obtain "social power" but more for something like calming down a "hunger" or a pulsation. That also would be true.

Even so, as a completist- you like having complete sets, so therefore you buy figures you like!

You have to pick certain ones that you hold in high regard for artistic or historical reasons. I don't think we collect complete sets for power. Only people who are interested in the hobby care. We are a small minority which I think most outsiders look at with amusement. ;D

That "power" is only achieved inside the certain community that person lives. That is, other completists like him. Because the value of the collection won't be seen by persons outside that community. Like, who would believe the d**n Battat diplo has that value?
