so i am planning on doing a lot more dioramas and right now i keep getting obsessed with Pliocene florida, here's my inspiration: www.flmnh.ufl.edu/sciencestories/2007/images/pliocene_painting.jpgbut i'm having a hard time finding exactly what lived there during the Pliocene so far i know Titanis and Chasmaporthetes (thinking of using the Papo hyena) oh and alligators but i keep getting weird info that doesn't differentiate between the Pliocene and Pleistocene. Can anyone help me or at least direct me to a Pliocene fossil site. Thanks psbtw my geologic time piece is coming along well!

The problem is that the Pliocene is not very well defined, and not much of it has to do with fauna, more with geology and climate, so the animals are not differentiated well. I would suggest searches using the ages Hemphillian and Blancan--these are faunal based 'ages' and so relate directly to the animals within. As for what a quick search found: Antilocaprines (Hexameryx, Antilcoapra garciae) Sloth (Megalonyx) Horses (Cormohipparion, Pseudohipparion) Rhino (Aphelops) Sabre tooth cat (Megantereon) Peccary (Mylohyus) Turtle (Lepidochelys, Eretmochelys, Kenosternon, etc) As for Chasmaporthetes--the Papo hyena would be way too heavy/massive. Chasmaporthetines were quite lightly built compared to a modern hyaena--they were all about running. Long, tall legs and relatively small heads. Compare: versus:

Perhaps a maned wolf figure might be customised into a good Chasmaporthetes?

You could try a Safari Ltd African Wild Dog. The Safari Ltd African Wild Dog pup might also work well.

You could try a Safari Ltd African Wild Dog. The Safari Ltd African Wild Dog pup might also work well. But...it looks like a dog. Right, because it is one. Sorry, personal pet peeve (I'm a big fan of hyenas)--wild African hunting dogs don't look like hyaenas at all. They look like highly specialized dogs.

i think i saw in your massive list of figures a chasmaporthetes (by ausini) do you have a picture? i looked through the website. they have some really good - because they are really generic - animals that have potential for many a future diorama!!

You did--although it's kind of a 'make shift'; it doesn't really fit anywhere. It's clearly a hyena, but too light-bodied to be a spotted: That said, the only real Chasmaprthetes figure that I am aware of was made by Ral Partha, about 12 years ago, as part of their Beastmasters line (a great line with lots of different carnivores--bear dogs, hyaenodon, borophagines, megalictis, etc): But it can still be found: rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?type=2&campid=5335874113&toolid=10001&customid=dino&ext=120330230014&item=120330230014In both cases, the figures are fairly small.

Eh well I suppose the chances of finding a civet figure are more slim then those of finding a hyena.

I've got lots of civet figures (Play visions, FUL, Kaiyodo, etc)--but they won't work for a Chasmaporthes, or any later hyena. At best, a palm civet would work for one of the earliest, like Plioviverrops or Proticitherium (and they are Miocene anyway).

Hey so I decided to make my Pliocene into the Pleistocene and I just have a quick question. I'm pretty good on mammals but does anyone know what Reptiles / Birds / Amphibians would be around? I would assume the fauna was pretty modern so there would be turtles and alligators and pelicans and the like ... right?
Thanks!
ps. paleoferroequine - thanks for being inspired by this post in making your amazing running hyaena!
