Is there any way to tell the non-electronic dino riders dinosaurs from their Smothsonian counterparts? (Like the Deinonychus for example). Were they marked differently on the bottom or are they literally exactly the same?

Were they marked differently on the bottom or are they literally exactly the same? The Smithsonian Dino Riders figures are exactly the same but without the motors. So they were much lighter, but that is all. They still had the openings where the motors would have gone in the earlier versions. That is what I remember reading a few years ago. |

I am referring to the ones that didn't have motors to start with. I am wondering if they are marked differently in any way.

From what i can tell the variation between the dinoriders and smithsonian release is subtle at best. The only differences i can think of right off the bat, is that the overall colours on the dimetrodon was more more vibrant in the smithsonian release, and more dull in the original, but this is almost only noticeable when you compare them. Also the styracosaurus and monoclonius, which in the dinoriders release both came with holes in the sides for the pegs of the harness, has been patched up in the smithsonian versions. Thanks. I was primarily wondering about the writing on the bottom, whether that is different or not.
Also, I've noticed some kentros have white on their nose, and some don't. Is one the smith version?

I have not checked the writing on the bottom. I suspect that the writing may be identical - at least for the ones that didn't have their battery compartments sealed in.
As for the Kentrosaurus - this has been something I've been debating with for some time - it seems there are a variety of different paint schemes - these are very subtle and it's hard to call it a true variation in the sense that it was a conscious choice. One day I shall explore further . . .

I checked the non-battery operated dinos (Deinonychus and Protoceratops) and the writing is indentical to their Dino Rider counterparts - the dates are 1987 and 1988, respectively.

I have the Quetzalcoatlus without its crest, as far as I know that's a version exclusive to the Smithsonian line. They removed the crest and named it a different species on the packaging. The date stamped on its wing is 1990.
