It could be that, but there´s no consensus so far. For all its worth, the tail doesnt look distorted (or "broken", as I clumsily tried to express). Some experts are inclined to believe the animal could achieve the pose in life, and as Dr. Naish says the actual flexibility of this structures are kind of hard to test since there aren´t extant animals with analogue rod-like bones. I think its a 50/ 50 chance, if we use parsimony. Time will tell, hopefully...

This is a black & white preview of my next piece: a Majungasaurus wondering why that Rahonavis just landed on his back.

Might you have made the neck a little too long? I'm not sure, but to me it looks like you've added a few extra neck vertebrae over the reconstructions I've seen. (Did you base yours on Scott Hartman's?)

Exactly, I used S. Hartman drawing...This animal have an insanely weird anatomy, so I might had get it wrong, but I´m pretty confident the neck is about this lenght. ...So, has this reconstruction been proven wrong or something?

So, has this reconstruction been proven wrong or something?] Oh no, I actually meant that it looked like you'd added a few extra vertebrae over those present in Hartman's reconstruction, ie. if you straightened the neck of yours out, it'd be longer. But maybe I'm imagining it... I really love it otherwise. Great texturing. Edit: Actually, I probably am imagining it. I thought "if you stretched the neck of Arioch's out, it'd be about as long as the torso! THAT can't be right!" Then I looked at Hartman's skeletal...ah.... Carry on then! ;D What a weird animal!

;D Yep, the lenght of the neck was also quite bugging me. That and the stout legs makes this beast even more duck/goose like. I guess it would be necessary for a better balance with the tail.... ? who knows. The painting is quite advanced, though im considering trying another scheme a bit less dull. I had no clue it had such a long neck, is this a recent discovery? But I guess that's just what islands do, make things look wierd! Great work Arioch! The detail is fantastic!

Do you really think he could turn his head around 180 degrees like that?

Really cool especially the colors. I must agree with stoneage though. I don't think the neck on this animal was that flexible.

Well guys, If you like the colors then I think I´ll keep them. I had no clue it had such a long neck, is this a recent discovery? But I guess that's just what islands do, make things look wierd! Great work Arioch! The detail is fantastic! Thanks! The reconstruction by Hartmann is quite recent , no idea how he reached this conclusions; if they´re based on fragmentary remains or some more complete material that only him and other experts have access to. But he´s extremely reliable most of the time, so I just guess this is right. Abelisaurs are really weird indeed. Although they obviously have traits in common, within the family we can get something like this or carnotaurus with the puny jaws and very long legs, almost the opposite. And as you say, insulation usually have odd effects on evolution. Really cool especially the colors. I must agree with stoneage though. I don't think the neck on this animal was that flexible. Humm... that probably could be impossible in a shorter necked theropod, but I think this ones long enough to do that . I´m going to dig in this matter though, because I´m not sure...

I think the 180 degree turn of the head probably also creates the impression of the neck being even longer than it is. Perhaps the simplest solution would be to have the head in three-quarter view rather than directly lateral?
