Hi all,
Is there a thread about fossil collections, and perhaps trading them? I tried searching for it but didn't find anything. Anyway, I wondered whether there might be an interest in members trading fossils we've collected? Seems like we're pretty spread out around the globe, and there might be some ability to spread the wealth, so to speak.
I am in the Pacific Northwest now, but spent time in Texas and the Midwest and have a lot of fossils lying around from my side of "the pond" (so many ponds!) - especially in the form of sand dollars, sea urchins and crinoids, but also leaf fossils.
I'm not really an avid fossil collector, it's been years since I've gone on any hunts as Oregon is covered in basalt, so, I'm not trying to get all greedy or anything. ;D But it seemed like it might be fun to make some lists of the fossils we've personally collected in our areas and, perhaps ship some around to share the pieces of what's left from the periods of this world we all seem to appreciate so much. It wouldn't take much to add a short note about where the fossil was collected, etc. and create a fun little exchange.
Just a thought.
If this has already been initiated somewhere, please direct me! If not, I can post some photos of fossils I am happy to share to kick things off.
OK, a bit later, here are photos of some of the fossils I've gathered over the years:
Mammoth Tooth Fossils - Washed up on barrier islands along Texas Coast
Bivalve fossils - found by the hundreds in road cuts along Texas highways
Some bivalve fossils spread out
A close-up
Another close-up
More mollusc fossils
Fossilized coral pieces - in a storage container
Coral spread out
Leaf fossils. Collected from a cliff-face at a public collection site behind a school in Fossil, Oregon. I have hundreds of these.
One of my first, and most favorite fossil. An iron concretion found near Braidwood, Illinois from the Mazon Creek fossil beds when I was a boy. I cracked it open with a hammer to find this beautiful fern leaf fossil from the Carboniferous. Wish I could go back there and fossil-hunt!
Sand dollar fossils, found at a colonial waterbird breeding island on a spoil island along the Gulf in Texas. Picked up just a few. There were thousands.
Horse tooth and Glyptodont scute fossils. Found on a berm surrounding a fantastic breeding pond for shorebirds in Texas. I was working at this bermed pond for months researching and protecting rare shorebirds and terns and while scouring the berms for nests I occasionally found some very cool fossils. I assume the spoil came from the nearby bay.

Another Glyptodont scute
Fossilized horse teeth

Another
Found this fossil on the same spoil berms. I have no idea what it is. Very cool though!
Another perspective of the same fossil
Snail fossil found while climbing a cliff-face in Columbia Missouri while in grad school at Mizzou
Some larger mollusc shell fossils found in Texas, with penny for reference
Same fossils with hand for size reference
Medium sized mollusc fossils
Fossilized palm - gift from a friend in Corpus Christi, that collected some from her father's ranch in Texas.
Same palm fossil, showing cut face and vasculature
Fossilized bone? Found in Texas
Different perspective of same fossil
I have a lot of spare bivalve fossils from Texas and plant fossils from Oregon, if anyone would like one. I would welcome an exchange, but will share what I have freely, with no expectations (within reason ).
