A thread for bringing to light little-known and rarely talked about, but surprisingly well-sculpted, dinosaur (or other prehistoric animal) toys. The safari protoceratops, and a knockoff on the right. This is the best plastic toy protoceratops I have ever seen, yet its almost never mentioned! Glow-in-the-dark Disney Aladar and Carnotaurus figures. Not particularly accurate for a real iguanodon or carno (well, aladar kind of is except for lack of a beak and eye placement), but the quality of the sculpts is very nice, and they are extremely accurate to the movie versions. And that's all I can think of for the moment. I have a bright pink pachycephalosaurus that is quite decent, but I don't have pics yet and don't know the company.

I never thought I would want any figure associated with Disney's Dinosaur but the Carnotaurus is one I've grown fond of...now I just need to get one. As far as Carnotaurus figures go it may be one of the better looking ones. That protoceratops is really cool and I didn't even know Safari made one aside from the toob version (which I also like).

The best Disney Carnotaur figures were mid-sized (15" long) and made in the UK...one was rubbery and remote-controlled; the other was a "puzzle" figure that had to be assembled. Both also came with an accompanying Aladar. I would recommend searching ebay UK for them.

Ah yes, the Safari Authentics Habitat Protoceratops is also one of my favourites. It feld like it took me forever to find one though, but a few weeks ago it finally happened And for some reason I also got the same knock-off you have some days later, so this exact pair is also on my shelf, together with the other Protoceratops's.

The one I posted is from the authentic habitats collection. There was a second proto in the 2005 dino toob, but it is not as good.

That one, the motion detecting carno, and the really big electronic roaring carno are all very good representations of the ones in the movie, but the small glowing pvc figs are still my fav. The aladar is the rarer of the two. The carno shows up every once in a while in UK toy lots.

I'd love to have that Safari Protoceratops. And I really like the Aladar and Carnotaur figures too.

I much prefer the Tyco Protoceratops. It may not be as accurate but it sure is more playable and less ugly. Also, some knockoffs of this toob Protoc. are better than the original. I just don't like the crappy paint job.

Thought I would share some of the Dinoking minis so you can make up your own minds about them... Apart from the ubiquitous pronated hands, the series 1 theopods are pretty great. The Daspletosaurus is pretty chunky, it seems all their tyrannosaurids are. Nicely detailed though and sculpted by someone who clearly has some idea what a dinosaur should look like. ... which only makes their Tyrannosaurus look worse in comparison. Seriously, look at it! Fugly head, awkward pose - I was so disappointed when I finally found it after months of searching, and now I can't even get excited about repainting it. Bleh. Now that trainwreck's out of the way, meet the series 2 Iguanodon in all his quadrupedal, thumbspiked glory! And he's not alone - series 2 also has Fukuisaurus and Althirhinus. Finally, a Lambeosaurus from one of the "action somethingorother" sets. These contain two articulated models mounted on spinning tops, which I'm sure makes sense to anyone playing the game these are based on. For the rest of us, they make great custom fodder. Obviously these are all repaints, because the one major drawback of this line is the coloring. Bright cartoony primary colors, half-assed patterns... I guess the big ones are the same, though possibly slightly better painted.

You are inspiring me to paint my dinosaur king figs. Great repaints! I agree, the T rex is goofy looking. My favorite is the Carnotaurus. (which still eludes me)

Muahaha, I've got him... he's currently in primer waiting for me to decide on a color that doesn't look like crap. Apart from the too long arms it's a really nice model.

Interestingly, I have several of those top-figures (T.rex, Ankylosaurus, Torosaurus, Lambeosaurus, Ceratosaurus, Amargasaurus) that were all sold as bootlegs in a dollar store (but look the same).
