Awesome! You just reminded me when me and my dad caught a 7 foot alligator gar in a lake near us. He had to weight 200 lbs! Yes, these gar are monsters! I think the record was 10 feet something and 400 lbs..? I may be wrong, but I know for a fact that alligator gar are usually very non aggressive fish. I wouldn't go sticking my finger into the lake after I released it though! Very nice article.
Thanks!

Far out, do you have a photo of that gar your dad caught? I would not go anywhere near a body of water that contained one of those things! There was some really good alligator gar footage on a recent Monster Quest episode. It looked a lot different than the one in that article.

I used to keep Florida spotteds. Very cool fish, and yes, very passive--my arrowana used to pick on them mercilessly. Until she was denied the opportunity to come with us when we moved towns.
Apparently my Centre was originally supposed to have a gar tank, but it never happened (yet!). After all, we get fossil scales here from strata from late Cretaceous all the way to ~32 MYA!

Salthingyer Crocodiles and Freshwater Crocodiles are both native to Australia. Saltiwater Crocodiles are the largest species of Crocodiles reaching lengths of 20 feet in some cases. Freshwaters, although smaller, are also large and have narrow snouts like gharials.

We have a freshwater fish here in Australia called a Dew Fish, they look very scary and prehistoric. I caught one a few years back about 1m long, they have a massive mouth and huge scales.

I don't live far from the biggest Croc in captivity in Australia, its at Steve Irwins zoo near Brisbane in QLD Australia. I have been to the zoo like 5 times just look at the crocs and massive pythons.

Very cool. On the coast of Texas (The gulf of Mexico) me, my brother, and my dad went on a fishing tournament on the ocean on a large fishing boat. Turns out, I caught a big 42 inch black-tip shark. I thought I was going to win, but another kid caught a 42 inch jackfish, so we had to split the pot. I got 25 dollars that day....

Actually, I'm not for animal cruelty. I told them to let my shark go and not throw it in the freezer. I don't think its right to let a shark die from lack of oxygen. Besides, I don't eat shark.

animal cruelty? i didn't mean eating it alive, i would not throw it in the freezer either untill it was dead. If i decide to keep a fish to eat it is killed instantly.

That is probably just some crazy local name.
