Hey.
My first academic-ish inquiry...
I was thinking about my childhood dino books and toys and it occurred to me...
Whatever happened to trachondon? Last I'd heard, maybe as far back as the 80's, I think it had been renamed anatosaurus.
Since my reintroduction to dinos this decade, I've never heard a reference to it.
Can I assume the species was somehow discredited? I don't want to bother anyone with having to present a really involved response. Just wondering in general.
Thanks. Brett

I believe that the species is now known as anatotitan. They have a small toy of it in the Sue collection.

The material has been reassigned to a number of taxa, including Anatotitan, Edmontosaurus, Lambeosaurus, Kritosaurus, and probably others. Long story short--no more Trachodon. Like many early genera, it kind of turned into a dumping ground (sort of like Megalosaurus).

The holotype material of Trachodon is scrappy so it is a dubious (invalid) genus. The toy Trachodons from yesteryear were based on material belonging to Anatotitan, a genus also considered invalid by some authors, who place Anatotitan material into the genus Edmontosaurus. Typically messy dinosaur taxonomy ;D

When that name was around the animal was standing almost vertical. Just like with Brontosaurus to Apatosaurus, it changed to Anatotitan.

I figured it was something like that...or some dino witness protection situation...
Funny I never get it a thought until now.
Thanks x4. Brett

"Anatotitan" is not that great,as a name for a dinosaur...I still call him "Anatosaurus" ;D

I think "Anatotitan" sounds cooler, like it is more menacing. ;D

And its a true titan inside the hadrosaurids...only shantungosaurus exceeds him.
