In the novel Nedry isn't the biggest problem...the Park actually starts getting back on track after his attempt... but the power fails again after the improper restart , freeing the Raptors ( which even Nedry knew better than to free ) breeding dinosaurs and the military finish off the job. Only a few of these were mentioned in the film ( should have been a 2-2 1/2 hour I think ) if the Raptors hadn't been freed then things prob could have proceeded with few problems...I can't figure why they didn't use the wild raptors in the first one..a larger pack would have enforced the breeding angle more.
Both Parks had issues that needed more time..so a further theme for both was science as well as business rushing ahead blindly that lead to the down fall.

Have to go SAT here for a moment: Jurassic Park is to Jaws as Hook is to ET. Lots of spectacle, no heart, no character. The film is unworthy of being a classic in anything but the technical sense. Still, give me dinosaurs eating people and I'll be happy. Hell, just make a movie calle Dinosaurs Eating People and I'll be first in line to see it. I think Calvin has the right idea for JP4:

I think you've got an idea there. Dinosaurs make it to the mainland, somewhere still remote. Then the people start disappearing and we have to go to war with the Dinosaurs. We could end up blowing the state of Texas off the map in order to save the country. Blow up Texas? We'd succeed from the US if America tried anything, since Texas is the only state that can indeed do that. "Laddie, don't ya think you should... rephrase that?" -Montgomery Scott

I can't even tell you how many times I watched that film in theaters alone...and the thrill every time Hammond said " Welcome..to Jurassic Park "....easily my favorite character..so haow can one even think it had no heart of character !? My opinions of the other films you mentioned are also diff...Jaws was an alright horror film to me, Hook has a great Captain Hook and Smee character...E.T. my mom sort of liked it..never really even cared that much for it at all... if I want aliens..I'll see Cameron's ALIENS ... ;D

How's that? ;D A--he is mocking your grammatical error of the word 'succeed', which means 'to gain or find success in an endeavour'. I think you mean secede. B--no, it's not possible. That is a myth perpetuated by a small (but as usual, vocal) minority. Although I don't know how much of the rest of the US would fight it... ;D Kidding.

Ha, when you said "A" I thought you were addressing my name, as that really is my name- A. Thank the lord. That's been bothering me for weeks. I knew it wasn't properly spelled, as I've never seen it written before, but I couldn't find it when I made a quick online search. Years of A+ grades in english and I cannot spell secede--for shame on myself. Oh, by the way; endeavour, as you spelt it, is often spelled "endeavor". However, it can actually be written with an "ou".

(Ex.- Humour) ;D I wasn't correcting him, I was just pointing out it can be spelt like this. Yes, she is the original spelling. American English was derived from Britain, anyway, after the Revolutionary War. (Colour/Favourite; yes I know cordy, but thank you. ) ------- And I knew you were kidding. I could somewhat tell before reading the last word. This state isn't going anywhere though. ;D

Spelt was an important staple in parts of Europe from the Bronze Age to Medival Times. You should use the word spelled! ;D A+ is too easy to attain in today's school systems.

Are you talkin' about the same "Jurassic Park" i've seen so many times?! What the friggin' hell...I know tastes in movies are REALLY subjective,but...C'mon... I'll grant some of this comes from being one of those who read the book when it first came out, and remembered the anticipation many felt at Speilberg handling the material. The film is decent summer material, but if you think there is any actual character development, I can't imagine you've seen many well written films. There are two Speilberg's now. There is "Oscar Speilberg" and "Pop Speilberg." Oscar Speilberg understands plot, drama, and character. Pop Speilberg knows how to put together great action set pieces. It used to be the two Speilberg's would collaborate on their films, giving us great entertainment such as Jaws, Close Encounters, Raiders, and ET. But then Oscar Speilberg went off to make Color Purple, Always, Schindler's List, Empire of the Sun, Munich, etc. Pop Speilberg moved on to Hook, Jurassic Park, Lost World, War of the Worlds and Crystal Skull (on second thought, Phone-it-in Speilberg may have done Crystal Skull). These are films that still have awesome set pieces, but the connective tissue is woefully thin, and treat plot and character in ways that Oscar Speilberg would never approve of. Part of the problem is that Pop Speilberg is often overseen by Daddy Speilberg, who no longer sees any value in traumatizing small children (remember, the early Speilberg efforts were instumental in the creation of the PG13 rating).

But what I felt came from my love of dinosaurs, and the awe of the first effective use of CGI to create photoreal critters. It did not come from story or character. The whole thing is an amusement park ride. The characters get on the ride at the beginning, get scared a few times, and get off at the end, essentially the same people they were at the beginning. Hell, the film doesn't even really end - it just... stops. The characters run away from the T-rex and grandpa pulls up and tells them its time to get in the car and go home.

I know it's not the novel...I read it myself several times before the film came out....and yes the dinos are the main draw..theres no questioning that...but dismissing the character as flat..just pulls at me the wrong way. Hammond is a great character...look at the scene between him and Ellie in the dining room..his reminescing and line delivery in that scene is just superb... I even have one of the quotes of his taped here by the monitor " Creation..is an act..of sheer, will. " Hammonds whole character changes throughout the film and that scene is the realization and turning point for him. I hated the Hammond charcter in the novel..of course we were supposed to...but the idealic old man fro mthe movie also struck a chord...and if those actors weren't a hit with fans they would have been long forgotton..but they haven't. What about the score that came about as a result of the film ? Journey to the Island is def a recognizable and popular piece...people remember and know it. A movie that has had that much impact on people on so many levels certainly deserves more than the the label " thrill ride " or " roller coaster " .

The soundtrack of JP is easily John Williams' Best work, and one if not the best soundtrack EVER Everytime i listen to the main theme,i can't help but to feel some dust in my eyes...And that's because this beautiful music, and (obviously) the movie itself means so much to me,it basically embodies my childhood ;D (then again, even if it could sound stupid, this movie helped me a lot to get through a very difficult situation for me and my family, back in '93...)

Empire Strikes Back, Raiders, and Superman are better Williams scores. And Close Encounters may have been his best. It depends on what you like, but I found the JP score rather uninteresting. In fact, it is the only Williams score I don't have anywhere.
Heresy I know, but I don't even have the movies. I saw JP once in the theater, and once on vhs. Same for Lost World. I have seen JP/// waaaayyy too many times though, as tv seems to never tire of running it......
