I duly noted Dr. Adam Stuart Smith as being consulted regarding the design of the Liopleurodon, when I blogged about it, as I wish proper credit was given to each specific individual who assists in the creation of such replicas. On another matter entirely, not involving Dr. Smith.... With reference to the alleged color scheme (things can change, of course) of Safari's new Mosasaurus, who is to say that such a color design was not the one that existed. I see it shows a bit of a lighter tone or white on the underside of the head. I just went on two long whale watch trips last Saturday. Not surprisingly, most of the marine species (whales, dolphins, porpoises, basking sharks, tuna, even birds) that I saw were rather monochromatic on the surface, but lighter colored below, just like this Mosasaurus. As many of you know, it is a frequent color display design for aquatic life. Cheers, Loren A lighter underside would be a very fine paint scheme, but from what I am seeing it looks as if the Mosasaur's belly is the same primary color. Its very easy for the posture of the Mosasaur in the image to hide even a substantially different shade of blue in that area, but I'm only saying this from what I believe to be there. However, if there is, I take back what I said entirely. A single color that surrounds most of the figure seems dull, but a realistic shading difference is certainly a plus.

Anyone live or visiting in Las Vegas?
If so, you might get a preview of the new Safari models for next year between Monday September 14th and Sunday September 27th, at the SuperZoo Show in Las Vegas Booth #3329 and the Las Vegas Souvenir & Gift Show in Las Vegas Booth #717.
Take pictures.

Am I the only one who thinks basking sharks are really creepy? I know they aren't particularly dangerous and all but seriously. If I were swimming and saw that coming at me....I would pee my bathing suit.

If I were swimming and saw that coming at me....I would pee my bathing suit. Nope. I've always thought they were eerie looking. Also, why wouldn't we just fly? I've been to Vegas countless times and I've never had to make the 1500 mile trip by ground.

If I were swimming and saw that coming at me....I would pee my bathing suit. Nope. After loving sharks for so many years none of them scare me anymore. Especially not the big filter feeders like baskings. If my ears didn't pop so violently when I dive I'd swim with them all the time!

^ I have, many different species, quite a few different localities, often after fossils. I have been in the water and up close with sharks, rays, morays, cudas', dolphins (bottlenose) sea turtles, freshwater turtles of various species, water snakes and plenty of gators too. That's what they make snorkels are for (I also have an inner ear problem with my right ear, which I am deaf in from a serious automobile accident, and as long as I don't go for then about 20' down, its not a problem) (on, and the basking shark breaching photo - fantastically strange!) I have seen various cetaceans of many different species do it, but never a basking shark!)

Have you swam with sharks before? It wasn't really "simming", the water was 4 feet deep and there were small sharks and little rays all around, it was at some aquarium in new jersey a LONG time ago, like 1999. All I remember was touching a stingray

About the Carnegie sculpts-
For those hoping for the Carnegie ichthyosaurus to be something other than hue's blue I am sad to say you will have to keep waiting. The paint job is very much different sets of blues, darker atop, lighter on the bottom. Its not a gentle blend but rather like splotching seen in whales. If I recall it has a small brown line sepperating the two main colour segments. I cant recall what it looks like perfectly as I saw a few of the varitions of the paint before the final one. Ultimately, although not highly innovative in colour, it does look very good and believable. People should really, really like it. Of course, the sculpt is fantastic.
The Cryolophosaurus is the show stealer IMO. Although it is nothing crazy, it looks very natural and believable- I was immediately attracted to it. It uses a good blend of different browns over the body, with some more natural subtle striping. The crest atop the head is blue in colour. Although it may sound simple, the execution was very good looking, akin to the velociraptor repaint, or the dimetrodon.
I'm not sure when they are coming out at all.. Lets hope we get a date and prices! (And I am hearing the prices will be higher again)

If these are indeed as great as you say, I wouldn't mind paying $30 each for them...

It's only recently that they've been doing some justice to Rogers' original sculpts. That's true. The 09 Spinosaurus and 08 Diplodocus by Rogers (Which have a color scheme eerily reminiscent to each other) do major justice on her sculpts in my opinion. It seems as if the companies' creativity is getting better. Not to say some of her earlier works didn't have nice paint jobs.
