What's the difference between ''Black Detail'' and ''White Detail'' ? I thought it's just the color. I ask, because I can't order the Giganotosaurus in Black Detail from Shapeways, but I still can order the White Detail version. I now ordered ''Frosted Ultra Detail''.

Interesting--I have a couple Black detail figures, and I don't see why, if you can get white, you can't get black.

Black detail is the same as white detail. They print black at a different plant which may explain why I often have difficulty with Black Detail orders. That plant's restrictions might be slightly different. I put the hold on Black detail for the Giga because I'm tired of trying to fix a design that I know works fine. This is the fun part of Shapeways!

Thank you for the info ''D''. ;-)
Can you tell what is the best material for your models from Shapeways? I want the highest details possible.

Miron
White detail seems consistantly good, but scabbing of excess gel with a toothbrush and then painting then with a thin layer of flat grey will allow you to see all the details better. A can of tamyia flat grey works well, but don't overdo it! Heavy painting with a brush will kill any details. Frosted Ultra is nice, but some areas on my copies had rough spots on the surface. I do need to paint these to see if that is an illusion from texture underneath the transparent surface. Ultra really brings out teeth, claws and spikes though. Avoid stainless steel, glass, porcelain as well, these models are too small to print in that size. The colored flexible materials are not great. I found them too grainy. D

Hello David,
thank you very much for your detailed answer on my detail question.
I'm very curious how the Giganotosaurus in Ultra Frosted Detail will look like. According to Shapeways infos about the materials only Silver can be produced with even higher details and a smoother surface.
Another questions: Have you checked if the Diplodocus withouth personalized plaque will ever be available from Shapeways?

Woah! Those look great! What material are they in?
Also, how about a picture of all of them together!

They are all in white detail. I can try photographing them all together, but I ought to forewarn that I'll probably botch the attempt!

Congrats, Himmapaan! I only received the Agustinia today (which I ordered in White, Strong & Flexible). I ordered all of the others, too (including both versions of the Ekrixinatosaurus), but those are going to be "Frosted Ultra Detail" and they were not shipped with the Agustinia, I wonder if production takes longer maybe because there's a waiting queue for "Frosted Ultra Detail"?

I hope they arrive soon! I'd love to see them in 'frosted ultra detail' if you have time to take pictures.

My Shapeways package also arrived yesterday (seems we all placed our orders on the same day ;D). But I was at work and the UPS man took it with him again and left a message . ....... and today is a feast day ..... waiting ....... waiting .......

Ultra frosted takes a while. Shapeways has a big backlog if orders to get through. I'm still waiting on some of mine from weeks past. PS. Whoever thought they could get away with ordering these in ceramic successfully must be a very optimistic person! Your Giganoto was cancelled today. Try white detail, it's the best bet. D

Thank you, Helge; as are yours, as ever! The WSF material isn't unpopular with me, though. I actually like it. I shall probably order duplicates in it to paint up.

What's wrong with WSF? That's what I was gonna order mine it... xD
What do you guys think is the best material to get these in, to send to Martin to paint and build up?

Thank you, Helge; as are yours, as ever! The WSF material isn't unpopular with me, though. I actually like it. I shall probably order duplicates in it to paint up. Thanks Yes - I think the WSF material is pretty good for painting, gives the skin a rough structure - as can be seen on the Garratt models. Left unpainted your white detailed versions do look much better. Another pro (my story): I ordered two figures in Detail material in the past. Both arrived with broken parts. On the other hand: My Bethe Human scale figure (18 cm and much heavier than the prehistoric figures) fell off the shelf during cleaning process about 1.5 meters to the floor and it didn't even have a scratch - it's in WSF, which really is kind of flexible . What's wrong with WSF? That's what I was gonna order mine it... xD What do you guys think is the best material to get these in, to send to Martin to paint and build up? There's nothing wrong with WSF . I was just a bit ironic, because David himself doesn't like it too much and prefers the White Detail versions. My Garratt models (originally WSF) do look fantastic !!

I absolutely agree on the White, Strong & Flexible. It's not bad at all and the most durable. I must admit that I had similar occasions with figures falling from shelves and nothing happened to the WS&F ones, so far. Oh, and nice to see your models arrived, too! Your Giganoto was cancelled today. Oh, no! - Ah, wait, it seems I misunderstood you, you were referring to a cancellation of a Giganotosaurus in ceramic, didn't you?

Ah okay, good. I really like the rough texture of WSF. Makes them look more realistic when painted. Thanks, guys.
