Shane's display was easily the best at the show- the setup along with the quality of the models were truly impressive. It would have been worth driving from New Jersey to Kentucky just to see that alone. Couldn't have said it better myself. Shane definitely knew what he was doing when he decided to go with a red cloth for his tables. It just pops, and grabs your attention as soon as you enter the showroom.

He actually did have a small lighting setup this year. He had one of those plastic tubes with leds in it. I don't know what the technical term for it is. He had one of those going along the bottom table. You should be able to see it in the pic of the entire setup. It's nothing major, but enough to catch your attention. I didn't even think to ask if Sideshow had contacted him about doing work for them. I always assumed they had, but he turned them down, so that he could focus on his models. I'd much rather he do that, because no matter how great a sculpt he did for SS, they'd end up giving it a less than perfect paint job. No, side show did NOT contact me . Well they bloody well should have ! ;D I've mentioned you several times in my emails to them..maybe one day they'll wise up. Rope lighting is what that is. I use it in the haunt a bit. I was thinking more large spotlighting.. ;D If Shane did a really awesome piece for SS though we could always get it repainted. Just like the ones we have now could be..but the paint is decent enough I haven't thought about it much. Doing piece for them would also help his business at least a little bit I think...get his name tossed around a bit more. Get my name tossed around? dude where have you been ? after 14 years in this trade , i dont need sideshows help. if they contact me fine but im doing ok on my own. I look at as ANY publicity or name tossing is a good thing...especially among collectors with expensive tastes that might not otherwise be aware of you eh ? I enjoy getting publicity where I can..I've fought hard to get what I do...so I've become something of an opportunist where it's concerned. Of course I understand you've done quite well on your own...but I've noticed collector's of Sideshow's Dinosauria line now know names of the artists they didn't before. Didn't mean to insinuate you NEED them or anything..just trying to help as I always do...no hard feelings I hope ?

[/quote] I know you like SS pieces cause they are more affordable, doesn't matter the quality or the missing teeth or the terribly bad paint job, and of course is reasonable cause I guess those Chinese guys who made this SS pieces don't make a million usd a day. But you don't care about it you are happy cause they are affordable. Don't Get me wrong my friend, I am just trying to help you.

I appreciate the help bud, let me try and clarify . My opinion on the line itself is in no way related to my suggestion, it's simply more mass market and thus easier to get your name out there is my point. Yes you may be doing well on local tv and in niche markets, but if a cable tv channel say Nat Geo or Discovery comes along and want to do a piece on you do you turn it down because your already doing well ? I know I couldn't and I know others would kill for it. So suggesting one small way it could help by doing something mass market isn't a crime is it ? Anything that helps your business like that can't be called selling out in my opinion. On the line itself, " Affordable " isn't a great word..lol 2-300.00 or more is pretty difficult to come up with. I haven't had any missing teeth on mine and the paint job ,though it could be a heck of a lot better I admit, is still good. I'm pleased with them, not " happy " really...I don't get really happy over much anymore. I was yesterday and the day before..but that boat sunk quick enough...

Yeah, Blade is always enthusiatic about suggestions, he has always thrown out ideas to me-I have always taken them for him trying to get involved in the work of the artists he likes- reading his post I don't think he meant anything other than that Sideshow would be lucky to have Shane do a sculpt for them- a definite compliment from an obvious fan of Shane's work which is very apparent from all of his posts on this thread

Thanks Malcolm, I do tend to get VERY involved, sometimes that's a good thing others not so much. If anyone thinks I'm ever butting in where I shouldn't I hope they feel free to say so..in a way that at least shows they care but just aren't interested in help or opinions. I know I don't have the skills, talent or money to do what all these great artists do but if I'm able to help in some small way..makes me feel like I'm part of it to a tiny degree at least.

No big deal, everyone gets on here and has his or her say about what they think and thats what i was doing, being that we were talking about me. I get that alot still that i need to get hooked up with SS and im sure if they called i would be willing to do work for them as i stated on this thread, but its not my big break for sure, its more just another commission job that i would do my best at. In reguards to mass marketing i would NEVER do that . It cheapens the rareness and collectability of my work. I love the fact that i am in charge of my work and how it gets distributed and that on any given model only about 100 or so castings get out there world wide. so to me that makes it something to get before its gone and makes them a little more nessasary to collect instead of saying ,oh they make thousands and i can get on anytime. I also like the personal touch of it all and i keep track of every person who gets one. No im not upset at all ,more just stating my opinion about my own business. thanks for caring enough to share your thoughts. -Shane.

Thank you, I wasn't looking to insult or diminish your achievements at all..just helping as much as possible. I felt like I stepped in it before with comments on how you could do the Allosaurus in that one email...just figured this time was me going too far. I tell you if I were rich you would see tv shows dedicated to paleo-art instead of fishing, taxidermy and such..I just love what you guys do. Doing a piece for SS would be one mass-market piece..technically..even if it's " limited "as well...it would be advertising really and something that pays you to advertise..wouldn't that be something ? Getting paid to advertise instead of the other way around..heh

I totally agree with what you say here regarding mass production and keeping a control over your work- I think collectors appreciate the hard work and time you put into your lovely pieces, and keeping them limited makes them more desirable and collectible and special to the collector- I like that you keep track of every piece you let out into the world

Yeah i take alot of pride in each one i do , they are kind of like puppies to me , i want to make sure each one finds a good home ;D some producers see them as copies of resin flying out the door but for me every casting is very important and i pack them with care. I love it that my customers get as much joy opening the model and building it as i do spending months creating each one. Some projects my wife is glad to see go ,as it dominates the house longer than she would like, kinda the same way a Great Dane takes over the sofa!!

I hope my Apatosaurus wasn't taking up too much of your families house space. ;D If it makes your wife happier, I can take those protoypes off your hands, give you more space. Btw, I consider each piece I have of yours, to be one-of-a-kind. Other people may have the same kits, but they aren't finished the same.

Prototypes eh ? heh heh
Anything painted by human hand can't be done exactly the same each time..you might get close but it won't be exact. Any chance you number each kit or something similar I know some other model sculptors do .

Gorgeous statues, sexy as hell (especially the Rex and the Apato)... Too bad he gave his Allosaurus dog-like lower lips and (but that's a common error in paleoart) too much evident skull fenestrae

I don't know..they don't looks nearly as bad as I've seen in others work..and it's hard to refute something that's just flesh and doesn't preserve. Actually I don't see so much of " lips " but just areas where the skin ends and the dips in it are from the teeth hanging over..typical of this kind of restoration.

I think he means the lower lips should be more scaly and show less or any flesh at all.
And speaking of which , does the author of this little wonders plan to do any feathered dino ? and more concretely, any dromaeosaurid? ;D

Don't worry, Blade, i think that's a terrific restoration of the Morrison predator, awesome indeed, but i bet you too can see those sort of undulating pink the lower jaw, as the Allo's gnarling his teeth... As you say, we can't be sure if those flesh structures existed or not, it's just that those lipped restorations of theropods (and i include the ones mainly made by japanese artists, where even big-toothed beasts like T.rex and Spinosaurus have bigass lips like a komodo dragon) aren't my cup of tea. Regarding the skull fenestrae... As i said, that's a common error in paleoart; as modern animals teach when we look at them, it's implausible that the holes in the skulls of dinosaurs were visible when they were alive; muslcles and skin filled and covered them... The only animals whose faces are very close to their respective skulls are crocodiles, but that's an extreme example

Well, its unlikely that the skull fenestrae in theropods was covered by very big muscles so it should be vaguely noticeable, at least the upper zone.

Sid, I thought those were what you meant..but I'm not sure I would count those as lips though..they are very small. Could be wear lines or something. Regarding those fenestrae..I know I've seen birds the skulls were at least slightly prominent ones..and I don't think bird skulls are very well muscled or covered thickly by tissue.

Ones personal opinion should not be confused as facts. A person cant say this or that is a "mistake" when its actually just an opinion and not shared by everyone else. If you look ,it has large muscles in the fenestrae area which bulge out and dont sink in as most interps do. and there is skin over the muscle and since Dinosaurs are related to reptiles and birds ,both who share a tight covering over the skull and should not be compared to mammals or the sorts. I dont preach that my work is the bible on how they looked in life and unless you were the one responsible for creating Dinosaurs yourself, consider giving those who try to bring them back to life for others to enjoy some leway . I dont sculpt dinosaurs from my armchair, ive spent 30 plus years researching and compiling evidence to come up with what you see in my work. Its all about doing what you love to do and do the best with what information you can deem as the most plausible. Its not clear cut and dry, wish it was. thanks for looking .

Sorry if my posts sounded too preachy... Sometimes i forget that i'm just expressing my opinion! Shane, as i already said your sculptures are beyond the awesome (especially the Rex), and you're right when you say that dinos are closely related to crocs and birds (well, birds ARE dinosaurs) and both are quite tight-skinned in the skull department... It's only that i don't think you could have seen all the holes in a skull of an healthy animal, it doesn't look very natural to me; at least you fill'em with muscles, they are not sunken like other guys usually do (both professionals and not). If only you'd repaint the fenestrae in the same color of the rest of your Allo's head, it would look much better
