Yeah I agree. You will never get better at it until you try. Practice practice practice!

You mean with watercolors? I have zero skill on that.... I could try but I´m afraid it would end very bad... By the way I made that Olorotitan inspired by your work! Practice makes perfect

Oh well, I guess I can try something...why not? Another problem is the original versions are too dirty to paint over it. I guess I can print one of these previously cleaned with photoshop, though it could look a bit strange once coloured. Also I dont use colour pencils since I was a little kid and use to eat them...lol

I really think you should just do an original and color it with something. Draw it very lightly with graphite pencil or something. Then color it and you can always go over it again with the dark lines after. I'm willing to assume you wont eat the pencils now lol.

I really think you should just do an original and color it with something. Seconded. I don't think you're likely to eat the pencils now either. ;D

So your part Beaver ? At least it wasn't glue.. lol
I do VERY few things in color myself...I prefer pencil and pen. I've done some 2D with mixed results and model kits which seem to turn out best. The detail of the models seems to make my paint jobs 100% better.. ;D

I think I will try that with the Batrachotomus. I started two sketches more since the last one but they´re already shaded with pen. (I´ll post one of them in a few minutes. Its a quite dramatic piece).

Wow, the frog-slicer is amazing. That you have already sketched a couple of my ideas is tres cool. I have a bunch more, but I'll give others a chance first!

Thanks! I´ll probably have something to show tomorrow. And now.... DEADLY EMBRACEOn the climax of the fight, a Neovenator and an Iguanodon stick their claws into the opponents body. Both will die because of their injuries. durbed.deviantart.com/#/d3ht32n

Cool - I like it, but then again, I would, wouldn't I?

I bet you would! This is my first work with coloured pencils. Though later I had to fix some small areas with photoshop. A young Balaur Bondoc flees from two adults who just claimed the remains he was scavenging, and aren´t willing to share them with anyone. The plumage style is inspired by the modern african relatives of dromaeosaurs, like the secretary bird and the ground hornbill.

Hooray! I like the red fleshy 'masks'. I often look at the secretary bird for inspiration too.

Cool! I love how you've paid attention to detail - the double claw and all.

Thanks! though the red masks are actually made of short feathers and not flesh here. I wouldn´t dare to go so far with the analogy. And well, the double claw its not like a detail you can forget easily! Balaur has become quite a popular dinosaur precisely because of its massive hallux. I can be absentminded sometimes with some anatomic details but this really has no merit (also the paintjob is very sloppy..I obviously need much more practicing). Now back on the Iguanodon vs Megaraptor, I think is my finest line art job so far. I think I finally found the kind of style doing the scales that I really like and works better; following the muscle lines and folds of the skin rather than covering the whole body or just random areas like in the previous pieces.

My latest sketches are about to receive the coloured pencil threatment (I´ll add all the details at the end). Wish me luck! Herrerasaurus: Uploaded with ImageShack.usA couple of Liliensternus (male and female, you can see the sexual dimorphism in some details of the anatomy) attacking a Plateosaurus: Uploaded with ImageShack.usAnd the Batrachotomus: Uploaded with ImageShack.usI´m definitely taking a break after finishing those....

These are all def looking really good. But why did you make that one liliensternus' left foot all crooked again?

Post by arioch on Jun 3, 2011 19:47:13 GMT
Uh? the foot is following the angle of the body. Anyway the sole of the foot like other details is unfinished, once done it would look less like a front shot, I guess...

Hm ok. It really looks like a lateral view of the body but once completed it will probably be fine.

Its is a half side view (check the arm position), maybe I will modify the other foot a lil bit in the final version to make it clear.
Btw I accept any advice or request regarding the colour scheme on the animals, something original but also natural looking...at the moment I´m doing the herrerasaurus sort of zebra like but black and white stripes doesnt look too good on him. My lack of skill doesn´t help neither lol.

I see the hand. The torso looks too long then. Maybe show more of the chest if you can and make the torso and tail more condensed. I'm assuming the neck is turned to the side.
