Just had to comment on this. I know all of you have heard this at some time, and it's funny and makes you shake your head. You have an illustration or sculpture of say Tyrannosaurus, and someone comments that it's well hung?! They confuse the Pubis hip bone for the animals maleness.  Anybody else have some funny or well annoying things that they hear from people sometimes. "Doesn't brontosaurus need to be in water?" Bangs head against wall.  |

In our country, a lot of ppl consider Triceratops (well, large Ceratopsians in general) are reptilian equivalents to todays rhinos... Most frequently, a lot of folks think T.rex and Allosaurus lived at the same time, or even consider them as identical dinosaurs.... |

and folks are surprised when they see the size of a real velociraptor because they've thought they were the size of the jp-raptors...

Yeah, here it happens a lot with me. That thing about the dinosaur maleness happened last week, when my little brother was checking out the Sega T-rex I had received. A lot of people don't know any species besides T-rex, Triceratops, Velociraptor and Brachiosaurus (JP audience???).
But, I have some fun once in a while, specially when my mom is looking at my collection... yesterday she said: "I like that bear over there". [pointing out a Megatherium) ;D.

Most people I come across think that all dinosaurs coexisted with each other and cant seem to grasp the concept that tyrannosaurus is actually closer in time to us than to something like a stegosaurus.
My grandfather was asking me about dinosaurs and he was shocked to find out that there are at least hundreds of different known dinosaurs.

The pubis bone one is funny. ;D Those are the people who do not know about dinos OR modern birds and reptiles.
I don't talk to other people about dinos much, but the thing I have run into is people assuming that the only dinos to exist are ones featured in JP movies. All large carnivores are t-rex, all sauropods are brachiosaurus, all raptors are velociraptor, etc.
And once I overheard in the lunch room one of my coworkers telling the other about how scientists now think t-rex was only a scavenger.

If I had a dollar for every time I've had to explain that... ;D It's funny the stuff that ends up in the public consciousness...anyone want to count how many times instead of a dinosaur's real name or species they are referred to by their " Land Before Time " designation ? Long-necks, three-horns, flyers, ect.. lol |

Creationists don't want to understand, that's why no one's successful explaining stuff like this to them. I've heard a lot of creationists say that god put the fossils on the ground to test our faith... But, back on dinosaur misunderstandings, most people I know only call pterosaurs by the generic name "pterodactyl" or "flier" and have no ideia about the divisions of Mesozoic Era in periods. And everyone thinks that plesiosaurs are dinosaurs. |

My grandmother believes that Dinosaurs and Dragons are identical entities.

I also happened to run into ppl saying that extant reptiles are the descendents of dinosaurs, and birds are descendents of pterosaurs.....the worst thing was that some of those ppl were school teachers..... You get the idea how hard it is to correct them  |

In defense of pteranadons and pterodactyls, I can never remember the difference either Neither can most people, so don't feel too bad... maybe some simple illustrations could help things... Pteranodon:  Pterodactyl:  Think of it like T. rex vs. Compsognathus  |

I still find people who believe Stegosaurus had 2 brains. "Petaradactyls" are flying dinosaurs, they had bat wings and could hang upside down from tree branches, and were completely covered in scales. Also, plesiosaurs, ichthyosaurs, therapsids etc. all being dinosaurs and living at the same time in the same place. Many people still refer to ceratopsians as "Three-horns", Sauropods as "long-necks" and so on. The large amount of fans in the Internet who refuse to accept feathered Velociraptors. When we were about four, my cousin used to think Dimetrodon could use it's sail to fly. |

I work with fashion designers. Their eyes glaze over when anything dinosaur is mentioned. Yeah your a freak when you can answer with more than yep or nope. |
