Neither, thanks very much The only animals I like are dead ones. j/k That doesn't mean I walk around the streets laying traps for the local wildlife and petlife though, as far as I'm aware, most palaeontologists don't hunt their specimens. I have great interest in them as biological organisms, and huge respect for animals (I'm a veggie!), I just can't understand why people build up relationships with animals, and let them slobber on their knee, and call them 'mr muggles', and the like. I think it's how we are brought up... I never had a pet as a kid and my mum was scared of dogs. I think to be a pet lover you have to be around pets your whole life... Probably, every one of you disagrees with me...

no, you don't have to be around some pets your whole life to be a pet lover. My parents never like dogs, and they used to forbid me from keeping them. However some years ago they half-heartedly adopted a few puppies from their friends (first time in their life), and now they love their dogs and having like six of them.
My favorite pets however are turtles. They are cute and they don't bark. And they actually follow me around (for food of course), but still very cute.

I have mainly kept fish for most of my life, primarily predators. I have one polypterid that I have moved around for the last 12 years or so (it's in my office now).
I have three others that I donated to the Tyrrell museum when they outgrew me. I have also kept stingrays, gars, morays, arowanas. Also a few lizards and many frogs in the past.
Now, just the one fish, and a cursEd cat. He became an outdoor cat after one too many pee-on-the-bed incidences. It was that, or a drive out to a farm.
That is why I prefer contained pets (I did not bring home the cat).

As i said, while liking basically every animal which ever lived on this planet,i prefer (speakin' of mammals,of course) cats rather than dogs. My family has always had a special bond with cats and such,a relationship made by mutual respect and,basically,friendship...Plus,cats are quite independent, don't have to be taken out to take a dump, don't mess in your house (well, except when they have to sharpen their claws ;D),and, last but not least, they are very clean animals (at least, the ones i had and have). Ehe,i don't feel ashamed to say that i consider 'em like my brothers and sisters...They are members of the family, after all If only Iside (my cat, whose name stands for "Isis",the egiptian goddess) wouldn't slice and tear apart my poor skin whenever she wants to play... ;D

I enjoy animals a great deal, and live with many different species. Allergic to dogs and cats, and most fuzzy "house" creatures, I really enjoy working with horses, other hoof stock and primates. I don't live with any of those though.
In response to Dinotoyforum, I would suggest people have varied reasons for living with and establishing relationships with animals. I am sure some do it in a "child substitute" and others keep them as trophies. I know for me working with and keeping the animals I do, is both a job, and a hobby I find extremely exciting. I would say its more then a hobby, a lifestyle, as I spend much of my time working with the animals, and training them. We need to have a good understanding of what one expects from the other to have a effective relationship where we can both gain from it. I very much enjoy these sort of working relationship with these animals.
I feel that if you respect the animals you live with and work with, (and even those that live around you) and pay attention to them, you can firsthand learn and see fascinating behaviors and life events right in front of you that other people can only read about. Hatching chicks, fledglings taking to the air for the first time, nesting turtles, and the like. Granted, I was raised around animals, and have lived with birds my whole life, and reptiles/amphibians nearly that long.
I can say I have never had a pet "share a home with me" like a dog. All of them have cages or specialized enclosures, and a fair number are not housed "inside the house". The closest thing to having an animal that shares my space constantly are my sulcata tortoises, who though they have a room of their own, are allowed to come out and roam my bed room/work area under supervision. I think its pretty neat when the largest one, Sahara, comes over to get her neck and head scratched while I am typing or painting.

I think I did have pets when I was younger, so that may have had to do with my having animals around. I'm a cat person, dogs are not more friendly than cats, they just disguise their needs a little bit more. What's more, cats can be friendly and warm. Besides, they don't hump your leg After my dear 16 year old cat died a few months ago my family and I decided not to have another experience as painful as that, so we obviously didn't want another pet. But circumstances took care of that. Right after her death we had to adopt another cat; she's a very friendly animal that used to live in the parking lot, but some neighbors threatened to poison her, so we were forced decided to take care of her. She doesn't go out anymore.

Probably, every one of you disagrees with me... ARE YOU KIDDING?? Dont get me started on how much I love pets! I've kept hamsters, gerbils, mice, rats, cats, dogs, fish reptiles, amphibians, ferrets and birds!!!! They are so lovable and fun. Its good to just spend time with a pet. It dosen't lecture you on what you should do or get mad when you do something wrong. It just, stays quiet usually and intentionally you know it cARES FOR YOU. If I didn't have my many pets I own today, life would be much more meaningless. (Not that I'd commit suicide! ;D) What is wrong with you people that say pets are wrong or cats are better then dogs or dogs better then cats or reptiles better then mice? No pet is better then any other pet. They are all just as caring as the other and both have their good and bad aspects. To be a true animal lover, you must love and respect all pets, not just a cat or dog.

I think dogs win in this. I mean, cats are all out snobs. They really are. They poop all over your furniture, they pee in the corner... *shudders*
Dogs are very warm and cuddly, and they even like to sleep in a pile, so if you are ever feeling cold, you can just curl up with one of them. I think dogs are more friendly then cats, and are way more loyal. My cat moved out a year ago to a house down the street. Never once came back. I think they are great companions, and you can even bond with them. That is why I like dogs.

Cats I'm sorry to say are more cuddly then dogs. Dogs however, are more physically playful. Cats too can play...just get a string or laser light and watchem go for it! Dogs and cats are both usually loyal. You or someones probably scared the cat into leaving. If you don't give the cat attention, feed it, or even notice its there...it won't attach to you and has no problem leaving. Same with a dog. You don't pay attention to it, it won't care to come back to you. Snobs? Cats arent humans, they can't be "snobs". You think just because they usually keep to themselves and are more independent they are jerks? Who in the world taught you that? My ferret pees and poops in the corner all the time. You saying that makes my ferret a bad pet?

And with the dogs being cuddly thing, you should see my golden retriever vinnie when he is tired... He is a cuddle-machine ;D

No, I get an attitude when people bash other pets and say one s better then the other. You didn't have a bad attitude, just a negative one.....why don't you like cats? Give them a chance, you'll change your mind once you get a cat that really loves to rub on your legs. ;D
I have a dog who is cuddly too. But my cat is more cuddly because cats are more layed back. But dogs, when it comes toplay, are fun-machines! ;D
My brother's ferret, oh boy, is the craziest thing you will ever meet. He makes a dog look like a sloth. Ferrets are actually the most fun loving animals. Its a fact that if you don't play, yes literally play, with your ferret, it will become depressed. He just sits near the door on his cage waiting to come flying out. He once ran from our room and managed to knock over a trashcan before I was able to get him....but they are so fast they can get away from you. Like little weasels! ;D

It is true that the cats are more layed back. They sleep like 18 hours a day, and the rest of that time is eating, playing, or looking for a new place to sleep. ;D

You are starting to really appreciate a cat for what it is! Especially when you own one....you really get attached. Its really cute when they sleep on the bed with you all curled up.

And no, meerkats are mongooses. Not related at all to mustelids. Closer to hyenas and civets (and, a little further, cats). Mustelids are basal on the dog line along with bears, skunks (yes, might be a separate group) and racoons.

Ferrets are close cousins of the mongoose though.

There is an easy way to tell a stoat from a weasel -
Weasels are weasily recognizable but stoats are stoatally different.
