Hah! I didn't get anything. My family isn't exactly excited about my hobby, so no, I never get dinos from them. I'm with you--I don't get any additions that I don't buy. As much because I would ask for obscure things that only I would know where to find them anyway, as because they wouldn't actually know what to get.

Well, I pretty much had to get my own dino-related gifts myself! As I had mentioned before, I got the big hard-cover 2007 book, DINOSAURS: The Most Complete, Up-To-Date Encyclopedia For Dinosaur Lovers Of All Ages. And, I got a great deal from A&E/The History Channel for pre-ordering The Complete Season One of JURASSIC FIGHT CLUB. For a much redused price, I got those 4-DVDs plus the 3-DVD 2007 set of ULTIMATE DINOSAUR COLLECTION (Before The Dinosaurs: Walking with Monsters / Walking with Dinosaurs / Allosaurus / Chased by Dinosaurs). I got all 7 DVDs for $56. That's only $8 per DVD!!! I didn't get any figures, because I'm saving my money for the new 2009 replicas! ;D

I got that book too!
It's really, really good -- Holtz does a fantastic job of explaining dinosaur groups from a phylogenetic perspective, and the little "columns" by other paleontologists are great.

Wheezy, where did you find Teton's book? I've been looking around a little here and there, and I haven't seen it. I'd really like to get a hold of that one!

I got mine in the bargain bin at Borders Books. I don't know if they sell it anywhere else, some of those oddball bargain books are Border's exclusives. You DO NOT wanna have that puppy shipped though. Wheezy will tell ya, its a monster, and gives you a work out just looking at it

I'm sorry to say this, but after seeing Rey's artwork online, I must say his paintings and drawings are completely overdone and distasteful. I mean, come on, am I the only one that sees that something's wrong with him?

Well, in that new book I got for Xmas, most of the illustrations are pretty realistic looking and somewhat what we are used to seeing. There are some pics that are in there to illustrate extreme possibilities. But, they do include statements saying that these are highly speculative in nature and there is no proof as of yet. Like the turkey-looking Dromeosaur.
I do think that pics like that Tric hatchling are wayyyyyyy too cartooney, lol!

I do believe I am on the record as being a complete not-fan of Luis Rey's work--way too garish for me, and feather supporter or not, he goes way too far. Ceratopsians, wattles on raptors, etc. It's ugly and pointless.

I have to agree with you on this Tomhet- i think the first one of the hatching triceratops is just goofy looking, and the second one looks like a dinosaur wearing a turkey costume for halloween- why? WHY??lol i checked out his site to see if these were just abberations- but all of his stuff is the same just goofy looking in my opinion- plus the coloring is not natural looking at all- it looks like some artist's indulgances, not like the types of coloring you see in nature which i find is usually a better source for coloring paleo reconstructions than the imagination. YOu could argue that birds and reptiles have bright color schemes, but not in the combinations this guy uses, his pallette is all wrong. Again just my opinion.

^ Some of his dinosaurs are nice. I like his carnotaurus the best. They are brightly colored, but they look nice:

YOu could argue that birds and reptiles have bright color schemes, but not in the combinations this guy uses, his pallette is all wrong. Again just my opinion. I was being a bit too harsh earlier (had a bad morning) when i said ALL of his stuff looked goofy, iagree that the carnotaur looks nice(that is more of a natural color scheme than most of the stuff on the site)as do some of the other ones on the site- I guess i was reacting more to all the wattles and other speculative renderings on the site-which wouldn't be as objectionable if they were done in a more convincing manner. Notice the sculpture that he collaborated on with CM Studios that is on his site- when the reality of three dimensions is involved he is much more realistic, less flamboyent in his choices. That is a problem i find in a lot of the paintings and drawings of dinos and other prehistoric creatures- it is so much easier to push reality- fudge things a bit to make them work-when you are working in two dimensions, as opposed to working in three dimensions, and artists tend to get carried away. Anyways , I am not saying I could paint or draw them any better- just making an observation.
