Are you sure those are Carnegies?? Holy...! And yeah that's definitely a spino, it matches the dal Sasso skull exactly. And I see she's responsible for the wrong wings on Caudipteryx... too bad, it's such a cool model otherwise

It says on her site they are...lol..but i can understand the doubtfulness... they do look excellent... Were the wings wrong scientifically when she sculpted it or are they just wrong now ?

Like I said, now all Carnagie needs now is a JP/Battat styled T-rex Do we really need another trex? I mean, we already have like ten good rexes to choose from. I'm glad they are updating their spinosaur, and NOT adding another trex or other "common" dinosaur. Yes, we do need tyrannosaurs. BTW, Spinosaurus isn't exactly an "uncommon" dinosaur himself

I can see Safari doing a new T-Rex for the WS line..and prob a whole new sculpt for the Carnegie one at some point...that or they could replace it with the Anniversary sculpt....but isn't it out of scale by a bit ?

Yeah but spino was popular from a movie. (thanks alot JP3), t-rex was made famous on discovery. Not to mention he was the first super predator ever found. There still cool though.

Yes Spino was made popular in large part due to JP, but all the articles on him didn't hurt either...much like Giga his fame spread due to talk and of course he has been a popular animal in lines as well if not in his current incarnation. Rex is the King...in popular culture at least ..ask anyone or show them a pic and they know who it is...it's not just Discovery..lol..read the last few issues of PT , there is a great article spanning two issues on the ole' Tyrant's popularity .

Rex is still on the top of my "Favorite Dinosaurs" list. That said, I would not mind another Spinosaurus !

actually, i wouldn't mind more tyrannosaurs- just not trex. Some other tyrannosaurs like eotyrannus, daspletosaurus, etc.

Daspletosaurus...def a good underated one. I wouldn't mind a Nanotyrannus after seeing it on JFC...it would make some nice dios wirh Rex.... Or that new Rex ancestor from the Triassic they found recently.

I can't wait to see the full sculpts myself...they are great..now if the casting is terrible or the color or paint apps then that could lower my opinion. The Spino might get a re-paint from me ...I love the look of the one from Cretaceous Creations of America...

It says on her site they are...lol..but i can understand the doubtfulness... they do look excellent... Were the wings wrong scientifically when she sculpted it or are they just wrong now ? Well I'm sure they lose some detail in the final product, these are just mock-ups. But still, this is an excellent direction for Carnegie, these look almost perfectly accurate and very lifelike. The wings have always been wrong, since the first known Caudipteryx fossil had perfectly preserved wings. For those who don't know, Caudipteryx only had small fans of primary feathers (ones stemming from the second finger of the hand) and no secondary or tertiary feathers (ones stemming from the lower and upper arm bones). The Carnegie model had secondaries and tertials and no primaries--it's exactly the opposite of how the real wing was! More likely she based it on the model from a famous National Geographic cover that had the same mistake. www.ldeo.columbia.edu/edu/dees/courses/v1001/images/caudipteryx2.gifIt also has three fingers. Caudipteryx third finger was basically vestigial and it looks like it was incorporated into the soft tissue of the wing/second finger so wasn't visible in life, and didn't have claw. I'm not sure if this was clear from fossils at the time though, it was only apparent in later specimens. It's also now known that the tail didn't have a V-shaped gap in the feathers, but this was a common misinterpretation back then, so that's forgivable. Here's a more accurate Caudipteryx: www.azhdarcho.com/Art/Paleoart/caudipteryx.htmlBut still with the V-tail. I actually can't find a single picture of Caudipteryx online that's completely accurate and up to date.

It also helps that it was one of the first reasonably complete dinosaurs found, and one of the first to go on display as a mounted skeleton in a museum in the US. Look at all the dinosaurs the AMNH and Carnegie museums initially put up... Tyrannosaurus, "Brontosaurus", Stegosaurus, Triceratops, "Trachodon"... Wonder what would have happened if the initial big displays were Camarasaurus, Dryptosaurus, Hypacrosaurus, Centrosaurus...

I'd like to see how the Giga looked in this stage..but Caudi looks pretty much the same from base model to final product. That's an interesting mistake..and being a sculptor myself, I'd would guess she looked all the images she could find to base it on..and like you observed, there wasn't any accurate artwork to be found. This is one Carnegie I haven't picked up yet, it looked almost too bird-like...ironic...eh ? But knowing more about it..I might go ahead and get him/her. Those names just don't seem to roll of the tongue as easily...lol prob due more to them being ingrained as they are in our minds though.

You say they put up a Trachodon. Where did the bones come from? I thought all they really had were some unidentifiable hadrosaur teeth.

And I'll probably pick up this one in the next week or so... ;D
