‘DINOSAUR TOY FORUM’ PREHISTORIC FIGURES PROJECT- This line of prehistoric animal figures, has been, and is currently being, developed in a collaboration between myself and the members of the Dinosaur Toy Forum in an ongoing process. The goal with this line of figures is to offer collectors a unique opportunity to participate in the creation of a line of figures. This line will feature unusual naturalistic poses, multiple poses of the same species, and unusual species not usually produced by the major toy companies-in addition to new ways of representing the iconic species more familiar to the collector. Forum members were originally asked which species of prehistoric animals they would like to see developed as figures. A general consensus was reached ragarding sizes, figures should be in 1:40 scale whenever possible. A process developed between myself and the members to create these figures. This collaborative process is simple. I sculpt the figure, using all of the latest references I can find, or am provided by forum members. I post photos of the ‘finished’ clay pattern sculpture for critiquing by members- who then give their feedback, sharing their knowledge and opinions regarding the sculpture’s accuracy, pose and other details. After the critiquing stage, some sculpting revisions, and after a general consensus of final approval has been reached, the figures are ready to mold, cast, and offer up to collectors. I am very pleased with the results thus far- and look forward to future collaboration with everyone that takes the initiative to participate in this interesting process-
This subforum was created to try to impose some kind of order to the project- making it easier for members to find the pieces that interest them- each individual piece will have it s own thread dedicated to that particular piece- please keep posts relative to each subject- general posts about the line can be posted on this thread-
I won't list any rules- just try to keep posts to the topic of the figures featured in that thread- in three months we generated 63 pages on the original thread- this project will be around a while and we all should try to respect the integrity of the collaboration and refrain from personal interjection that will distract the project- I will leave the original thread as is for now, for historical reasons and it will be locked down- but I will delete any future posts that are not directly related to the pieces being discussed on the threads in this subforum- I take this responsibility very seriously, and will be fair and impartial when I feel this editing is necessary to keep the threads pure of unrelated or offtopic posts- do not take this personal if you find one of your posts has been deleted- I am trying to think of members who have to wade through these threads to find out what is currently an issue of discussion-
Please don't post any orders for figures on these any of these threads- check my Classified thread for figure availability- PM me or email me with any requests or orders for figures-
Once again thinks to all of you for participating- you are just as important as I am in the creation of this line of figures which can be looked at as some sort of legacy generated by the collection of unique individuals that this forum has assembled.

I noticed that the next issue of Prehistoric Times (AFTER the one that is coming out in late April early May) features Cryolophosaurus- figured it might be a good idea to make one of those to send in for promotional reasons-to tie in with the feature of the issue-it also features that huge fish Leedsicthys-27 meters long which, in 1:40 scale would be 27 inches long-thinking of doing one of those to send in as well for the same reasons-might start to make that a regular habit- one of each of the featured PT critters as they come as a standard strategy for promotion of myself and the line-
Bythe way- anyone have a good direct side view image of a Cryo skeleton?-
Also- the Leedsicthys will not be one of the figure line pieces- it will be one of my museum model line pieces cast in rigid hollow latex like most of the other models in that line- this guy would be too big to cast in the solid urethane for such a specialized creature that wouldn't be in much demand I am guessing as one of the figure line pieces-

Thanks kikimalou- the black silhouette with the skeletal image within is just what I like to start of with-
Well nothing is for sure on the Leedsichthys- I just assumed that would be too obscure for most collectors, I could rotocast it- we shall see-

The most recent size's estimations for the Leedsichthys are between 9 and 16 meters. Perhaps some colectors here would like to feed their 1/40 liopleurodon with this still big and wonderful pilchard...

Hey Malcolm, it's me again with my fisherman's stories.
Some sites on the web are still speaking of 27m Leedsichthys but they are sharing not up-to-date estimations.
In 2003, two paleontologists digged up the most complete Leedsichthys ever found and estimated his size to 22 meters. Perhaps a range between 16 and 20m would be safe ?
But where is the captain Achab ?

Wouldn't it be easier to make a Xiphanctinus?

Wouldn't it be easier to make a Xiphanctinus? I have to say that I am with Tomhet on this one--I realize that marketing-wise, it makes sense to try and produce figures to go with with the 2 feature creatures in PT, but Xiphactinus is overall way cooler--big scary teeth, highly familiar in books and movies. Best of all, make it to scale with the Carnegie one, and we can get battles of epic proportions! Leedsichthys would be different from a collector view, but as a fish, it just seems...boring? Not that it's up to me.Unless there is a set to go with it--metriorhynchid, hybodont shark, etc.

And it's not that boring really, It's also popular, having been featured in WWD.

I don't think WwD (actually, CbSM) spells popularity--plus, of course, Leedsichthys was mainly shown floating and being eaten to death. I'm not saying it wouldn't be a good figure, just that there may be better fish to make first! Except to time with the PT article. Xiphactinus, on the other hand, has shown up in several different movies, is a staple at museums, and pops up in books quite a bit.

Xiphactinus will have its turn- the whole reason in the first place to do the Leedsichthys was as an idea for promotion- I think if I were to have in every issue of PT , figures and models for review that tie in with the featured creatures it will be a good way to get some PR until they get tired of me sending them figures - in all fairness to the beast, I don't think it is boring at all, at least not as protrayed in the WwD reference guide- check out the site that the city of Leeds has, they have a three dimensional rotation of Leedsichthys that shows how sculpturally cool it is- I think it is a very nicely designed fish- looks like a big hulk of a beast- plus as DTF said, it has the honor of being the biggest fish of all time- and actually would be a much easier sculpt than Xiphactinus- with all of its teeth- don't worry, before i die I will sculpt everything-lol

I don't think Mike will ever get tired of people sending him figures to review or mention...lol
He usually publishes lists of upcoming featured animals each issue .... I suspect he might plan even further ahead than that..you might be able to wheedle the info out of him...heh
I think the recast pic would be a good pose for a Cryo...though it's pretty similar to the Rex model.

Of course I will also appreciate a ferocious Xiphactinus but it is another marine big predator. When I think about the Leedsichthys, I see a majestic and quiet giant like a whale-shark, a blue whale or a "marine big sauropod". I hope Fauna cast will be the first, certainly the only one, to produce such a "toy", big challenge in all the different ways.

Xiphactinus? BORING! ;D Who needs that overgrown pirana when you have beasts like helicoprion? ;D
I think a xiphactinus would be pretty cool though. Maybe you could make it so that it could lock inside the tylo's mouth or something.

Well, I for one am looking forward to a Xiphactinus more than any tetrapod.

"I noticed this. Notice WS only sculpts Sauropods that look completely different from each other. There is more profit this way. People want variety in there toys, not a Brachiosaurus and Sauroposeidon for example. "
"Not to go off too far on a tangent, but there's also this company called CollectA that is known for it's odd assortment of unique sauropods, and they did it first: Shunosaurus, Rebbachisaurus, Amargasaurus, Brachiosaurus and Agustinia are quite unique from each other. Plus this year's offerings: standing Rhoetosaurus, Cetiosaurus (the most 'generic' looking one they will make) and Paralititan. Great assortment, and very diverse in appearance. "
Yes, but would they make an ACTUAL 1:40 Supersaurus like I am going to do? I found Scott Harman's site with all of his skeletal reconstruction drawings and the one of Supersaurus just begged to be sculpted- what with there being a side view, top view, front and back view- going to make that my first Sauropd instead of Alamosaurus, which will get kicked down the list a bit-

In fact, a better example might have been the scale models from Invicta (another fairly broad line of sauropods). I would expect yours to be done better--and of course, scaling would be a huge thing.

No worries about the posting- you were just replying to TR- I just sort of moved it here because I just saw it as an opportunity to sort of announce the Supersaurus- I am kind of excited to do it- finding the skeletal reference was the cataylst to really making me want to do that one-
I understand you weren't comparing my stuff to theirs either- I just like to tease and trash talk now and then regarding the toy lines- it makes it sort of fun for me to try to outdo them in some way- certainly can't compete on marketing and production level- but there are other ways to compete open to me-
